Budgeting and designing a dental clinic.pptx
1. BUDGETING AND
DESIGNING A DENTAL
CLINIC
Course on Soft Skill and Practice Management, 2021.
Prof. Dr Soumo Mitra, Dept of Orthodontics, GNIDSR.
2. Budgeting and designing a dental
clinic
What will you learn in this lecture?
Basic 6 principles which guide the designing of
a dental clinic.
Division of space into areas with specific
function.
Area wise design.
Estimate of budget.
This is a 50 minute lecture. Q&A time permitting.
3. Budgeting and designing a dental
clinic
At the end of this lecture the learner should be
able to:
Divide a bare space into clinic areas.
Design clinic areas keeping in mind 6 design
principles.
Have an approximate budget in mind for a
clinic.
4. 6 Basic principles which guide the
designing of a dental clinic.
Design esthetics
Functionality and comfort
Ergonomics
Technology integration
Infection control
Flow
5. Basic principles which guide the
designing of a dental clinic: Design
esthetics
Color scheme
6. Basic principles which guide the
designing of a dental clinic: design
esthetics
Dental clinic design esthetics should
promote a sense of calmness,
relaxation and peace by the use of
light colours in shades of blue, grey,
beige, wood tones and the repetition
of the same colour.
This is also achieved by the use of
clean lines and by minimizing clutter
by designing storage cabinets for
hiding clutter
7. The monotony of the use of a single theme colour may be
broken by the addition of focal points by way of art work,
greenery etc.
8. Basic principles which guide the
designing of a dental clinic: design
esthetics
…BUT know
when to stop
9. Basic principles which guide the
designing of a dental clinic: design
esthetics
Branding can be done where same
theme and color tone can be
maintained in the interior, stationery,
visiting card, clinic name board, and
website. Clinic logo can be
incorporated as part of the interior
so that people easily identify with it.
10. Whenever possible bring in natural
light.
In small spaces use more glass
rather than walls as partition to
create a sense of space.
11. Basic principles which guide the
designing of a dental clinic: design
esthetics
Clean lines, less clutter
12. Basic principles which guide the
designing of a dental clinic: design
esthetics
In dental clinic design if aesthetics
go hand in hand with functionality
the result would be a very soothing
space where clinician would love to
work for longer hours and patients
would not mind for a painful
extraction.
13. Basic principles which guide the
designing of a dental clinic:
Functionality and comfort
14. Basic principles which guide the
designing of a dental clinic:
ergonomics
Ergonomics
an applied
science
concerned
with
designing
and
arranging
things
people use
so that the
people and
things
interact most
efficiently
and safely
15. Basic principles which guide the
designing of a dental clinic:
ergonomics
Application of dental ergonomic will
increase comfort for the dental team and
decrease work-related disorders.
Dentists often suffer from low back pain,
neck and shoulder pain, wrist and hand
problems, stress etc. These are results of
awkward posture, forceful exertions,
repetitive motions like scaling and
vibrating hand tools.
These problems can be tackled with
appropriate work postures, shadow-free
lighting and organizing equipments and
materials in a manner that reduces
posture deviation while working.
21. Basic principles which guide the
designing of a dental clinic:
Technology
Dental clinic designing should be done
keeping in mind the kind of technology that will
be used in the clinic.
It is best to incorporate as much technology as
possible. While this may result in higher initial
investment, the returns via comfort,
functionality and of course better patient
experience will be manifold.
22. Basic principles which guide the
designing of a dental clinic:
technology
Even if you are not investing in all technology
initially do have a roadmap for the tech you
want to invest in and have provision made for
those.
For example, ensure that concealed power
lines, HDMI cables are laid and plug points are
available for computers, monitors, instruments
etc.
23. Basic principles which guide the
designing of a dental clinic: Infection
control
Infection control should be of utmost importance in a
dental clinic and the following should be
incorporated to help:
Use non porous, easy to clean materials for all
surfaces such as floors, cabinets, counter tops.
Metal, glass, laminates and glazed ceramic would
better choices than polished/unpolished wood,
marble.
Use suface finishes that are smooth and easy to
clean for frequently touched surfaces such as
door and cabinet handles.
25. Basic principles which guide the
designing of a dental clinic: infection
control
Plan the sterilization area well and use
technology that is recommended and
necessary.
Plan air flow in the clinic such that air flows
from the exterior via filters through corridors of
the clinic and out via the operatory. This is as
per current CDC recommendations.
Whenever possible have separate operatories.
28. Basic principles which guide the
designing of a dental clinic: flow
In positive psychology, a flow state, also known
colloquially as being in the zone, is the mental
state in which a person performing some
activity is fully immersed in a feeling of
energized focus, full involvement, and
enjoyment in the process of the activity. In
essence, flow is characterized by the complete
absorption in what one does, and a resulting
transformation in one's sense of time.

designing of a dental clinic: flow

33. Waiting room and reception.
Cool calm ambience by use of subtle colours,
clean lines, clutter free space. Break monotony
with focal points on wall. Arrange furniture to
allow flow and privacy
For every operatory 3 seating (patient +2) + 3
extra for the whole clinic.
Seating for patients and receptionist
ergonomically designed. Some chairs taller
and with harder seats for older patients.
36. Waiting room
Technology for entertainment : Wifi, soft
relaxing music.
Technology for infotainment: use
monitor/screen for showcasing your range of
services, aesthetically pleasing before and
after pictures, animated videos of procedures.
Technology for security: CCTV
37.
38. Waiting room
Technology for practice management
softwares can be integrated from reception
desk to operatories and lab through LAN to
devices ,or, for cloud based software via
internet. These softwares take care of:
appointing,
biomedical record maintenance,
lab record maintenance
billing.
39. Consulting room/area
It’s a luxury if you can have one
Even a 4’x4’ space is enough, seating for 2
patients one dentist across table
Its where you draw up dental treatment plans
as you refer to the dental chart, discuss
treatment options and estimate expenses.
Must use a monitor/screen for showcasing
your range of services, aesthetically pleasing
before and after pictures, animated videos of
procedures.
43. Sterilization area
The following is necessary:
Segregate your counter top space into
clean and dirty areas.
Used instruments enter via dirty area
on the dental tray.
Instruments are separated, waste
disposed.
Next the instruments are soaked and
washed in soap water…bioload
removal
44. Sterilization area
Next the instruments are put in the
ultrasonic cleaner followed by
rinsing and drying.
The instrument now move to the
clean area.
The instruments are inspected and
packaged for autoclaving or else
soaked for chemical sterilization.
Storage can be done in UV
cabinets.
45.
46. Sterilization area
Bright lights.
Counter top material should be non
porous and resistant to a variety of
chemicals.
Light colours in walls, floor, cabinets
so that any dirt can be identified.
Mininize joints between tiles.
Waste disposal system in place.
47. Sterilization area
Technology :
Soaking basin and sink..preferably
twin basin
Waste disposal
Ultrasonic cleaner
Packaging and pouching system
Autoclave
Chemical bath
48. Operatory
Operatory design has to be
ergonomic as it’s the area where
the dentist is most physically taxed.
There are guidelines for the
distances between the platform and
the head of the chair to aid four
handed dentistry.
52. Laboratory
This place will see a lot of plaster
and wax work. It is a good idea to
keep this area behind closed doors.
Countertops , basin, storage,
micromotor, lathe machine, ceramic
lab, cad cam setup.
Line the counter tops with plastic
sheets.
Have a small chemical soaking tub
for disinfection of impressions.
