Let us all celebrate Women’s Day by
acknowledging, accepting and sharing
their social, cultural, economic
accomplishments no matter how small
or big, as well as their active
participation in the ever-changing
political sphere where they are leading
from the front lines.

Gender Equality
Before we dig deep in details know
that the only way forward is when we
include not just people from different
spheres of life to create a gender equal
world but of all other religions, race,
ethnicity and country as well.

While we are celebrating women’s
day, we need to actively and proudly
support as well as promote gender
equality in our personal and
professional sphere of life without
any bias or discrimination.

Before we begin as to how we
can all achieve this let’s hear
what gender equality means
from UN Women entity of
United Nations:

“Together, we want to mobilize to end
gender-based violence; we are calling
for economic justice and rights for all;
bodily autonomy, sexual and
reproductive health and rights; and
feminist action for climate justice. We
want technology and innovation for
gender equality; and feminist
leadership.”

If we want to build a gender equal world
then first we need to acknowledge that
equality is not only a women’s issue
because when we look at it from a wider
perspective while being honest and open
about it, then realise it’s not just gender
based but also race, colour, religion, and
other factors play their part too.

When we look at the wider perspective
then it is evident that it’s not just some
segments of the society within a country
that are singled out but on larger scale
even countries are singled out for various
reasons and in each of these cases the
common denominator that is singled out is
women.

I believe to fix the larger issue of inequality
in the world first we need to fix and
continuously work to improve gender
equality in our homes, our workplaces, our
politics, our governments our boardrooms
because when equality prevails in all the
above spheres of life then the world in
general be more harmonious, pleasant,
affluent and that in turn will be healthier
for everyone.

Every individual is part of a group that
translates into larger society and their
behaviour, actions have a wider impact not
just people close to them but the wider
society in general.

When we behave and act in a manner that is promoting
gender equality then not only, we are advancing the noble
cause but, in the process, motivating others to do the
same and making a positive difference in the world.

Therefore, we as individuals as well as collectively being
part of the larger society when we act together and are on
the right track, then progressed is amplified.

uphold gender equality to global standards.

It stands firmly to for women’s equal
participation in all aspects of life, focusing
on four strategic priorities that are a
guideline for nations to follow:

This year’s Aurat March (Urdu Language) to
celebrate Women’s Day in Pakistan or as we call it
Women's March in western World has been in
doldrums with many petitions in the court for an
injunction to ban it on the pre-text that its aim
was to spread anarchy, vulgarity, blasphemy and
hatred" of Islam, but recently the court has
allowed it proceed but cautioned organisers to
ensure that all the participants adhere to “decency
and moral values”.

The Aurat March (Women’s March) has been held
in many cities across Pakistan for last couple of
years without any major issues unlike the
controversy it has generated this
year.

Let’s examine why the controversy and why such
toxicity against the Aurat March that has clouded
the real reasons and issues that women in
Pakistan face on a daily basis.

First of all, last year there were some banners in
the Aurat March that were objectionable and
against the norms of our society.

But also, let’s be honest and have some self-
reflection to ask ourselves that aren’t the
obscene wordings that were written on the
placards happen regularly in Pakistan where
women just have to ignore them, even by their
elders say ignore them or worst yet have to
endure all that.

If a woman is raped, abducted,
beaten, tortured or killed in honour is
not in any way disgraceful, then how
come or why women gathering to
demand and fight for their rights is
disgraceful.
Bitter Truth

The Controversy
The already hotly debated issue gained further
national prime time coverage when a famous
writer and director Khalil-Ur-Rehman Qamar
blatantly abused Marvi Sirmed a women’s right
activist on live TV show with other participants.

It all got ugly with Marvi Sirmed’s chants of
“mera jism, meri marzi" translated to English
as (my body, my choice), and let me explain
what the slogan entails.

The slogans does not mean freedom to do
anything or vile things as how it is portrayed by
some but it covers child/adult rape, sexual
harassment, child marriage, physical abuse, lack
of healthcare especially in villages, domestic
violence, human trafficking both locally & abroad
and bonded labour/slavery all of which are
prevalent in the society.

I personally do not want to repeat what the
writer said because it is too vile, not just for
woman but any human being, but do so with
a heavy heart as to explain in the context
what was the reaction of general public,
which also raises many eye brows.

Khalil-Ur-Rehman Qamar went on to say,
“What's in your body? Who the hell are you,
go look at your body and face; no one even
wants to spit on it. Don't talk in the middle,
don't talk in between the lines. What is your
body, bibi? Don't talk no bloody nonsense.
you bloody shut up. B**ch!"
Red Flag

First of all, the host journalist should have
intervened or muted the audio but it went on and
became a national debate. We can put all the
blame if we like on Marvi Sirmed but no one has
the right to talk such and even the ones who are
saluting and praising the writer while backing
their claim by using the cover of Islam…they
should know better that even Islam does not
allow anyone to be treated like
this let alone women.
The Right Step

What is worst or frightening is that
Pakistanis as a society have become
so hostile in their approach and don’t
even have the patience or the
decency to either listen to difference
of opinion or yet alone reply humbly.
Why The Hostility?

The root cause of the problem can be
traced back to our political landscape
that has changed so drastically
where people play the blame game,
which is the new norm either on live
TV talk shows and National Assembly.

When sitting governments officials
use their authority to abuse their
political opponents or even the ones
with whom they don’t agree with on
certain matters then such things
trickle down the society.

For instance when a government
minister slapped someone on live TV
and even in public gatherings, after
that he had no remorse for his
actions and he was neither
reprimanded by the government and
worse yet many people supporter or
praised his actions, then such vile
behaviour becomes the norm.

What is even more worrisome and
frightening that the write himself who
wants to improve the Pakistani society
through his writings, people who
support and praise his actions and the
ones with authority openly and freely
do this.

CONCLUSION
Then couple of question needs answering:
1-
Imagine what they will do behind closed doors?
2-
What chance a woman has to defend herself?
3-
Who will proceed and support her furiously like this?
4-
Isn’t it because of such typical stereotype men’s behaviour and
attitude elders ask their women not to go out or when do be careful?
5-
Is bullying and suppressing freedom of speech the new norm?
6-
How complicit in all this is the government and the society itself?
