American University of Antigua Hands-on Learning From Classroom to Clinic
ACU_Bachelor of Nursing
1. This contemporary nursing curriculum is
designed to ensure graduates develop into
independent life-long learners. The course
aims to produce nurses who are creative and
critical thinkers and competent, professional
practitioners, who can respond to changes and
developments in the health sector.
The course encourages a learner-centered
approach including inquiry and situation
based learning that enhances the students’
experience and prepares them for a variety
of working environments. Students may
choose a clinical specialty in the final
semester; these specialty areas are reflective
of current demands within society and the
health care industry. Students will also have
the opportunity to develop leadership and
scholarship skills ensuring that they graduate
as competent, professional nurses.
CREDIT
Credit may be granted for previous studies
successfully completed at other recognised
institutions. Students may apply for credit to
the relevant Course Coordinator. Applicants
with overseas nursing qualifications and
nursing licences will be considered for credit
on an individual basis. Nurses eligible for
registration in Australia may apply for entry to
the Bachelor of Nursing and may be granted
credit for prior learning.
ACCREDITATION
Graduates are eligible to apply for registration
as a nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery
Board of Australia under the auspices of the
Australian Health Practitioner Regulation
Agency (APHRA), the new national registration
and accreditation scheme.
COURSE STRUCTURE
Students must complete 24 ten credit point
units (240 credit points) studied over six
semesters, including external clinical practice
and two elective units.
A Mental Health specialisation is available
from the second year.
Students with a GPA of 5.5 at the end of their
first year may apply to transfer to the Practice
Leadership stream.
CLINICAL PRACTICE
Clinical practice experience provides students
with the opportunity to integrate theoretical
and practical learning in a wide range of health
care facilities. This experience means that ACU
graduates will enter the workforce confident
and well-prepared.
