Compared to Indian standards, Goa forts are very small in size. Nonetheless, these are historic specimens of the immense military, political and economic importance in a land crisscrossed by rivers and canals and bordered by the sea on the west. Some are awesome in sheer size like the Ruins of the St. Augustine’s Tower, while others are marvelous pieces of architecture, such as the Gate of the Adil Shah’s Palace at Old Goa.

architecture, such as the Gate of the Adil Shah’s Palace at Old
Goa.
2. Chapora Fort
Location – Chapora Fort, located in Bardez, Goa, rises high above
the Chapora River.
Visiting time – 10 am to 5:30 pm
Built- The present fort was built in 1717, replacing the older
fortifications. Across the Chapora river, the Hindu ruler
of Pernem, the Maharaja of Sawantwadi who was an old enemy of
the Portuguese held the fort for two years after it fell to the
Marathas in 1739 in its first test.
Built For - The fort follows the outline of the higher slopes. This
forms an irregular outer wall that uses the natural form to add
defensive height to the fortifications. This offers an advantage
over dry ditches being dug. At the top of the steep approach track,
the main gate is small and unpretentious, but narrow and deep.
Depending on defense requirements, the positions of bastions are
irregularly spaced with enormous embrasures for cannon.
Visit For - It is a pleasant place to wander that offers fantastic
views north across the Chapora river to Pernem, south
over Vagator and also far out to the Arabian Sea in the West.
Built By - The site was the location of a fort built by Muslim ruler
Adil Shah called Shahpura, whose name the Portuguese altered to
Chapora.
3. Reis Magos Fort
Location- The Reis Magos Fort is located in a small village called Reis Magos in
the northern banks of the river Bardez.
Visiting Time – Monday Closed , 9:30 – 5:00
Built For - The fort was made by the Portuguese in a manner where abundant
amount of water can be preserved which were used during the time crisis.
Architecture- The architecture of the fort has the fusion of the Hindu and
Portuguese style of architecture since it was designed several times under the
rule of Portuguese and Marathas among others. The Reis Magos Fort was
bounded with laterite walls in the entire exterior. From the height in which fort
is built, one can get a splendid view of the surrounding area.
Reason behind name- Reis Magos is a Portuguese which means Three Wise Men.
4. Corjuem Fort
Location – This fort is situated 4km north of Pomburpa, alongside
the Mapusa river near the village of Aldona.
Visiting Time – 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM
Built- It was built in 1705 by the Portuguese.
Built For - It was a military fortress for the defense of Portuguese
India.
Visit For - It is smaller than the other forts in Goa, but it gives a
good view of the surrounding river and land.
History - This fort built in 1705 is one of the only two inland forts
that are surviving that are made of pitted laterite. The original
occupiers of this Fort were the Desai's of Sankhali but it was
traded into maratha hand later into Sawant-Bhonsle of
Sawantwadi.

5. Terekhol Fort
Location – Located on the northern tip of Goa at
the mouth of the Tiracol River.
Visiting Time – 12:00 AM to 11:59 PM
Built In - 17th century
Built For – Fort Tiracol was a symbolic location
where freedom fighters from Goa demonstrated
from time to time. On 15 August 1954,
Satyagrahis protesting Portuguese rule entered
Goa from three different directions - one of which
was from the North to Fort Tiracol, which was
occupied and flew the Indian flag for a day before
they were captured and imprisoned.

Reason behind name - The name probably
originated from the Marathi tir-khol meaning
"steep river-bank“.
6. Location- Aguada Fort is located on the banks of -
Mandovi River.
Visiting Time – 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM
Visit For- Tourists can watch the confluence of
Mandovi River and Arabian Sea.
Built For - The fort was built by Portuguese between
1609 and 1612 in order to protect themselves from
the attack of the Dutch and the Marathas.
Architecture- The fort is impressively beautiful
which depicts the beauty of the Portuguese
architecture. On the fort stands a four-story
Portuguese lighthouse, erected in 1864 and the
oldest of its kind in Asia. Built in 1612, it was once
the grandstand of 79 cannons. It has the capacity of
storing 2,376,000 gallons of water, one of the biggest
freshwater storages of the time in whole of Asia.
Reason behind name- A fresh water stream inside
the fort was used as the water supply for the fort
and that’s why the fort was named Aguada as in
Portuguese agua means water.

7. Sinquerim
Fort
Location- The Sinquerim Fort is located at a
distance of 18 kms.
Visiting Time – 6:00 AM to 10 PM
Built In - This fort was constructed in the year
1612.
Visit For- The beauty of Arabian Sea makes this
place a must-visit. This fort bisects the Sinquerim
beach shoreline into two.
Built For – The main intention of building the fort
was to guard Goa against the Dutch and the
Marathas. The fort served as a reference point for
vessels coming from Europe.
8. Nanuz Fort
Location – Nanuz fort located in Valpoi, Sattari
taluka of North Goa.
Visiting Time – 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM
Built In – This fort was built in 17th century.
Built For – Build for defense purpose and
accordingly changed by the ruler’s mechanism.
Built By – The maratha ruler, Shivaji.
Visit For – Nanuz Fort is a key specimen of
traditional architecture which stands within
Portuguese dominion in Goa.
Architectural Importance – Then fort is created on
the basis of Indo-Portuguese architectural style.
The fort is bounded by walls along with
watchtowers in various sides.
9. Cabo de Rama
Fort
Location – Canacona, South Goa
Visiting Time – 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM
Built In – Built in 1763.
Visit For – Inside the Cabo de Rama Fort, there is
the church of Santo Antonio which is in excellent
condition and is still used by devotees. The white
church and the black fort provide a photographic
picture of stark contrast. People come here to
pray and just enjoy the mystical atmosphere of
the fort.
Reason behind name - Cabo da Rama - Cape Rama,
takes its name from Rama, the hero of the Hindu
epic Ramayana, who, along with his wife Sita
holed up here during his exile from Ayodhya.
10. Rachol Fort
Location – The Fort of Rachol was located in the
village of Rachol, Salcette municipality, in the
state of Goa.
Visiting Time – 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM
Built In – 15th Century
Built By –It was originally erected by
the Sultanate of Bijapur
Visit For – The Rachol fort is significant for its
scenic beauty.
Architectural Importance – The fort was fully
built out of laterite stones.

11. Mormugao
Fort
Location – The fort is located near the
Mormugao port, a few kilometers north of Vasco.
Visiting Time – 9:00 AM to 6:30 PM
Built In – 16th Century
Built For –The Mormugao fort was constructed to
secure the port and the harbor.
Visit For – The fortress is one of Goa’s pre-
eminent tourist spots and remains exceedingly
popular to this day, probably due to the degree to
which it has been preserved. Its formidable
bulwarks and bastions are intact and fortify the
area to this day.
12. Anjediva Fort
Location – Fort Anjediva, built on the Anjadip Island
Built In – 1505
Built For – The fort was built on Anjadip island by the
Portuguese to enhance their military presence and
control of the Eastern trade route.
Built By – Dom Francisco de Almeida of the Portuguese.
Visit – Not allow to Visit to General Public.
