2. The legend of the Doudou
The Doudou is the popular name for a week
of shared jubilation which culminates on the
weekend of the Trinity. In it, the people of
Mons affirm the destiny of their city.
The doudou took its origins date back to 14th
century while Saint Georges won against the
dragon and became the protector of the city.
4. The combat named « Lumeçon »
The relics of Saint Waudru barely return to the Collegiate chuch before Saint
George prepares to face the dragon. He is accompanied by those involved in
the Lumeçon : Devils and Chin-chins, white men and leaf men, fireman and
policemen, Cybèle and Polyade.
At about 12:30pm, those involved in the combat then begin a triumphant
descent to the Grand Place : the « descent of Rue des Clercs. »
In front of the City Hall thousand of people have already gathered around the
battle arena by this point. Their aim is to pull the lucky horsehair where the
beast’s tail ends. Once in the arena, Saint George surrounded by people in the
game, fights against the dragon (first with a spear and then with a sword, and
finaly with a pistol).
This is an intensely exciting hour ponctuated by frantic music of the Doudou.
The dragon is finally felled by Saint George with a final pistol shot.
All those in the Lumeçon rush into the City Hall courtyard. The enthusiastic
crowd meanwhile, again chant « And the people of Mons shall not perish. »
The city’s fate is secured. The party can go on.
