The cost of using a data centre could be reduced – and the
environment aided – by reducing the amount of air conditioning
used, according to Facebook.
A study carried out as part of the firm's Open Compute Project
concluded that "100 percent outside air" is all that is needed to cool
its data storage facilities,arguing that operators of other data centres
may be using too much air conditioning and unnecessarily over-
cooling the premises.

2. Firms using offsite backup provided by may find they can make use of
such energy efficient facilities, with Facebook claiming it had seen a 38
per cent improvement in this area. The Open Compute study said as
much as half the energy being used by some data centres was being
wasted.
Facebook's vice president of hardware design and supply chain
operations Frank Frankovsky said data storage can work at 35 degrees
celsius, meaning "very few parts of the world are actually so hot that it
would require you to run air conditioning". He went on to remark that it
was curious to see engineers wearing jumpers in data centres in
Texas.

3. "Existing data centres can also make themselves up to 30 percent
more efficient just by doing things like separating the cold aisle from the
hot aisle," Mr Frankovsky argued.
The appeal of such data storage facilities may also be environmental,
as it means less energy being used to power air conditioning systems.
Companies may increasingly look to use data centres as the amount of
data they hold continues to rise, meaning it will become harder for staff
to get by using storage methods such as memory sticks or zip drives.

4. Last month, the Register reported hard drive manufacturer Gary Gentry
as telling the Flash Memory Summit in California that solid state and
hard-disk drives will not be able to keep up with the level of data being
produced, which by 2020 will have reached six zettabytes, as most
data will need to be kept for future reference.
