3. Welcome!
We’re thrilled that you’ve decided to be
a part of the first ever Ivy League-wide
conference on mental health. This
conference began with a simple idea:
What if we could bring together some of
the best and brightest minds to tackle
one of the biggest problems currently
facing our campuses, the country, and
the world as a whole? Thanks to you, that
idea is now a reality. Over the next few
days, we invite you to open your mind to
novel perspectives, open your ears to
absorb the ideas of those around you,
and open your mouth to express your
own unique experiences.

4. Who are we?
We’re a group of Penn students, who
represent different nationalities,
cultures, viewpoints, and fields of study,
yet are united by our passion for mental
health and wellbeing. We believe that,
given recent mental health-related
tragedies on Penn’s campus and others
throughout the country, action must be
taken. This is that action.

6. Keynote Speakers
Valarie Swain-Cade
McCoullum
Dr. McCoullum is the Vice
Provost of University Life
at the University of
Pennsylvania. In this role,
she is charged with
enhancing the ability of
Penn students to reach
their fullest potential
through diverse
academic, personal, and
professional
development
experiences. She has
taught in Penn’s
Graduate School of
Education and the School
of Social Work, and is a
former Master of DuBois
College House.

Gordon Bermant
Dr. Bermant is a Lecturer
in the Psychology
Department at the
University of
Pennsylvania. In the fall,
he teaches two seminars,
The Embodied Mind and
Psychology & Religion. In
the spring, he teaches one
Penn seminar,
Psychology & Law. He
also hosts an online
seminar in Buddhist
Psychology for graduate
students at the Graduate
Theological Union,
Berkeley. He is interested
in religious metaphors, as
well as the intersection of
morality and legality.
Dan Berstein
Dan Berstein is a
mediator living with
bipolar disorder. A
sought-after trainer in
mental health
communication and
conflict resolution, Dan
has led trainings and
support groups in over a
dozen states through his
company MH Mediate.
He hosted the first
National Dialogue on
Mental Health event and
trained organizers
around the country to
follow his model of
inclusive, impartial
dialogue across various
stakeholders in mental
health.

location for the workshops
throughout the conference.
It’s a pretty distinctive
building: Tall, salmon-colored,
and cylindrical.

This is where the Networking
Event will be held, as well as
breakfast on Saturday. A
couple of the workshops will
take place here, also. It’s
located right next to Houston
Hall and is a light green and
grey brick building.

here, as will the Speakeasy
and the Closing Ceremony. A
