Brigadier General Stephen T. Gonczy became the
Mobilization Assistant to the Vice Director of the Defense
Logistics Agency in June 1999. The Defense Logistics
Agency is responsible for providing the Army, Navy, Air
Force, Marine Corps and other federal agencies with a
variety of logistics support in peace and in war. In his
previous assignment General Gonczy was the Deputy
Director for Acquisition Policy in the Office of the
Assistant Secretary of the Army for Acquisition, Logistics,
and Technology.
General Gonczy was commissioned as an Armor officer in
1969 through the ROTC program at Marquette University,
Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After completing the Armor
Officer Basic Course, he was assigned to the 3d Armored
Division in Germany, serving in leadership and staff positions in armor and cavalry units (1970-
1972).
With a transfer to the U.S. Army Reserve in 1973, General Gonczy began a Reserve career in
material acquisition and management. He served in progressive assignments in technology,
program management, and policy development at the U.S. Army Tank-Automotive Command,
Detroit, MI (1974-1983), the Headquarters Army Material Command, Alexandria, VA (1983-
1988) and the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Acquisition, Logistics, and
Technology, Washington, DC (1988-1999). He became a member of the Army Acquisition
Corps in 1995.
Brigadier General Gonczy is a native of Chicago, IL and earned a Bachelor of Science-
Mechanical Engineering degree from Marquette University. He received a Ph.D in Materials
Science and Engineering from Northwestern University, Evanston, IL in 1978.
He is a graduate of the Armor Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, the Command and General
Staff College, the Material Acquisition Management Course, the Associate Logistics Executive
Development Course, the National Security Management Course, and the Army War College.
Brigadier General Gonczy has been awarded the Legion of Merit, the Army Commendation
Medal, the Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal with Silver Oak Leaf Cluster, the
National Defense Service Medal with One Star, and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal with
Silver Hour Glass.
In his civilian career, General Gonczy is the President and Research Director of Gateway
Materials Technology, an engineering consulting and research firm working in advanced
materials for the aerospace, automotive and industrial power industries. He is the
inventor/author of more than 45 U.S. patents and technical publications. He and his wife Anne
Marie (Laporte) reside in Mount Prospect, IL. They have one daughter Teresa a student in
college.
