Defense - A Critical Component in Ultimate Frisbee Strategy

  2. 2. Introduction  Based in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Steve Fair serves as senior swimming coach with Pike's Peak Athletics. Over the years, he has taught swimming enthusiasts of a wide range of backgrounds and skill levels, including candidates for the U.S. Olympic team. Steve Fair enjoys long-distance running in his free time and is a member of an ultimate Frisbee group. A non-contact sport favored on college campuses for decades, ultimate Frisbee is also one of the most strenuous in terms of the sheer amount of running involved. While offense makes the points, defense is arguably more critical and it requires a coordinated effort, with all team members working together closely.
  3. 3. Ultimate Frisbee  The foundational defensive strategy is “man-to-man,” with one player paired with another and guarding them throughout the game. The drawback to this approach is that constantly running up and down the field on defense can tire out players, with the most in-shape players gaining a significant advantage. Zone defense allows individual players to cover a specific area of the field, which cuts down on their running efforts and lets them conserve energy. It is also ideal on windy days, when erratic throws are prevalent and the Frisbee often arrives nowhere near its intended target. With teams forced into a strategy of short, tight offensive throws, the zone defenseman can comfortably cover the action in his or her area.
