History of film
First moving picture 
• This was regarded by many as ‘The Horse In Motion’ (1882). 
• Created by Eadweard Muybridge using wet plates which produced faint, 
highly underexposed plates that captured the motion of the horse. Once 
put together, it created a sequence of pictures. 
• He produced a celebrated high-speed study into the movement of both 
animals and humans. 
• Years later, his work was cited as a major inspiration 
for the invention of the modern cine-camera by 
Thomas Edison.
First colourmotion picture film 
footage 
• Created by Edward Raymond Turner (a pioneer from London) 
who patented his colour process on 22nd March 1899. 
• Edward Turner shot the test films in Brighton, England in 1902 
but his pioneering work ended abruptly when he died 
suddenly of a heart attack.
First ever movie shot 
• ‘Monkeyshines no.1’ was the first ever movie shot in U.S.A, 
1890. 
• It was shot as a camera test by W.K.L Dickson and William 
Heise – both who worked for Thomas Edison. 
• It was filmed for the purpose of being a camera test and not 
for commercial purposes but was classed as the first movie 
ever shot.
First copyrighted movie ever 
made 
• The first copyrighted movie to ever be made was called ‘Fred 
Ott’s Sneeze’ in 1893/1894. 
• It was the first movie made at Thomas Edison’s rooftop studio. 
The actual name of this movie is a record of a sneeze. 
• It was made in late 1893 but wasn’t copyrighted till January 
7th, 1894.
First motion picture made for 
projection 
• It was called ‘Workers leaving the Lumiere Factory’ which was 
made in 1895. 
• The Lumieres then held their first paid public screening of the 
motion picture on December 28th, 1895 in the basement of 
the Salon Indien Du Grand Café in Paris.
History of romance 
films
First ever romance film? 
• The first ever romance film to be made was created by 
Thomas Edison which was approximately only 18 seconds. 
• He created the first movie which featured a romance scene (a 
kiss). He named it ‘The May Irwin Kiss’. 
• It was a scene from the ‘New York stage comedy’ but was 
considered a romance due to that specific scene. 
• This resulted in being the most popular 
‘Edison Vitascope’ film during that time 
period.
First controversial romance 
film? 
• The first controversial romance film to be released was in 
1919. It was named ‘Different From The Others’. It was 
classified as different to the previous romance films that had 
been released. 
• This film was the first to address the issue of homosexuality. 
• Richard Oswald directed this film during WW1 in partnership 
with ‘sexologist’ Dr Magnus Hirschfeld.

films? 
• ‘Gone With The Wind’ (1939) – featured love 
and drama from an affair. 
• Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ (1968) – 
Featured love, lust and tragedy. 
• ‘Jane Eyre’ (1996) – Featured love and drama. 
• ‘Titanic’(1997) - featured true love and a tragic 
death.
Modern romance films 
• The Notebook 
- Release date: 2004. 
- Storyline: A poor and passionate young 
man falls in love with a rich young woman and 
gives her a sense of freedom. They soon are separated by their social 
differences. 
- Main actor and actress: Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. 
• Dear John 
- Release date: 2010 
- Storyline: A romantic drama about a soldier 
who falls for a conservative college student 
while he's home on leave.
