9. WHAT IS THE NORMAL RESPONSE TO
HORROR?
 We each have an understanding and “attachment” with the world
community as we know it
 Secure/Insecure/Ambivalent: Is the world a safe place or not? Is there a
guiding principle of goodness, neutrality, of neglect, of abuse?
 When we learn about extreme atrocities, it can be distressing; triggering
a threat response in our nervous system: “The whole world is a horrible
place!”

HORROR
 If we have extreme abuse in our background, there is a natural association
which can evoke an even stronger threat reaction
 This sense of threat can rupture our security and send us to fight/flight/”freeze

 We can also “protect” ourselves by reframing the seriousness and scope of this
information so it doesn’t hurt as much, or at all—with cognitive strategies of
denial, minimization, rationalization, blame-shifting, etc.*

 In 1988 a “hypothetical” complaint about a high-ranking police officer who was
involved in horrific abuse of children
 Investigation of his colleague Paul Ingram, led to Ingram’s arrest, investigation, guilty
plea and extensive confession, and a media frenzy over the ‘Satanic Ritual Abuse”
angle of case
 Result: conviction of three times the penalty that was originally assigned. Ingram was
sentenced to 20 years (maximum of sentencing guidelines) for child sexual assault of
children.
 Paul Ingram appealed his case 5 times, up to the 9th District Federal Court of
Western US in San Francisco, and was denied each time.
