calculated that tourism generated Rs.16.91
lakh crore or 9.2% of India’s GDP in 2018.

place as a tourist and putting in an effort to
make a positive impact on the environment,
society and economy without damaging it.
The United Nations has identified 12 major
aims for sustainable tourism (UNWTO-2013)

9. 1. The main reason for why India is lagging behind
in tourism is not maintaining proper cleanliness,
hygiene and sanitation.
10. 2. Poor infrastructure- The roads, transport, etc
is not up to the mark in India.
It is the ‘biggest hurdle’ to make the ambitious
‘Make in India’ programme. Infrastructure
deficit is costing upto 5% of the GDP and
improvement will boost export competitiveness
according to some estimates.

11. 3. Pollution- Tourists face pollution problem in
India. In some places like Delhi, pollution
levels are so high that people have to wear
masks in order to survive.

12. 1.The cleanliness conditions in India have improved
after launching and promoting the ‘Swachh
Bharat Campaign’ by honourable PM Modi ji.

13. 2. The NDA government is working towards
upgrading existing roads and building new links
to connect to the remote areas.
Some schemes which have been proposed for
improving infrastructure in India are-
Sethu Bharatam- it involves making of 150
railway over-bridges.
Rashtriya Rajmarg Zilla Sanjoyukta Pariyojana-
through this scheme, over 5,600km highways
will be linking 123 district headquarters to
National Highway networks.

15. 4. Adarsh Smarak- ASI has identified 100
monuments to be developed as modern
monuments. These monuments will be
provided tourist facilities like Wi-Fi security,
signage, encroachment free areas, etc.
Monuments included in Adarsh Smarak are
Leh Palace, Humayun’s Tomb, Red Fort, etc.

16. 5. Multilingual Tourist Helpline- The Ministry of
Tourism has launched a 27x7 Toll Free
Multilingual helpline in 12 languages. The
languages handled by the tourist helpline
include ten international languages namely-
Arabic, Italian, German, Portuguese, French,
Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish and
Russian besides Hindi and English.

17. 6. Creation of world class tourism:
The Swadesh Darshan scheme was launched
by the Ministry of Tourism for the
development of theme based tourist circuits
to cater to both mass and niche tourism.
Under this scheme, 27 projects have been
launched for Rs. 2261.50 crore which have
been sanctioned for 21 states and Union
territories in 2015.
