Safe working environment
1. 07. SAFE WORKING ENVIRONMENT
OBJECTIVES
At the end of this lesson, students should be able to demonstrate appropriate
knowledge and skills to work in a safe and healthy working environment and
also to contribute towards it.
2. WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Many believe that there are very few safety risks working
in a retail store. This is far from the truth. Every work
environment including retail stores have many safety risks
that you must keep in mind.
As you may have heard, repetitive strain injuries are a
common risk in retail businesses. These injuries cause
damage to your muscles, tendons and nerves, and can
develop over time when you do the same task over and
over.
To prevent repetitive strain injuries, use good posture.
•Besides standing or sitting up straight, work with your
arms and hands in a relaxed, natural position.
•Grasp items with your entire hand, not just your thumb
and forefinger.
3. WORKING ENVIRONMENT
•Avoid twisting your wrists as you swipe the scanner, stock
shelves or do other repetitive work.
•Take your scheduled breaks to move around, stretch and
relax.
•Talk to your boss if you develop signs of repetitive strain such
as pain or numbness in your hands.
•While lifting large boxes and heavy items, lift safely by getting
as close to the load as possible and squatting down to pick it
up and put it back down. Avoid leaning over or bending or
twisting your back.
•Slips and falls are a hazard in a retail store too. When you
clean up spills or remove debris you are not only protecting the
customer from falls, you are protecting yourself.
4. FIRST AID
First Aid
First aid is the provision of initial care for
an illness or injury. It is usually performed by non-experts
(or sometimes by an expert in case of an emergency), but
trained personnel to a sick or injured person until
definitive medical treatment can be accessed. Certain self-
limiting illnesses or minor injuries may not require further
medical care past the first aid intervention. It generally
consists of a series of simple and in some cases,
potentially life-saving techniques that an individual can be
trained to perform with minimal equipment.
While first aid can also be performed on all animals, the
term generally refers to care of human patients.
5. AIM OF FIRST AID
AIMS of FIRST AID
The key aims of first aid can be summarized in three key
points:
Preserve Life
Prevent Further Harm
Promote Recovery
Learn the First Aid method of DRSABCD
First Aid is as easy as ABC – Airway, Breathing and CPR. In
any situation, apply the DRSABCD Action Plan.
6. FIRE SAFETY
Fire hazards may be abundant in your retail store.
Below mentioned factors are major fire hazards
that could harm both employees and customers.
Exposed wire from lighting or computers,
Open flames in a store display,
Improper chemical storage in a back room or
Combustible materials left near a heat source
To ensure you're prepared for any fires that may arise,
given are few tips to handle or avoid such accidents.
Don’t Panic.
Evacuate the store.
Always keep fire extinguishers in your store
Make sure all employees are trained in how to use
them.
7. EVACUATION PROCESS
A wide variety of emergencies both man-made and natural
may require a workplace to be evacuated. These emergencies
include - fires, explosions, floods, earthquakes, hurricanes,
tornadoes, toxic material releases, radiological and biological
accidents, civil disturbances and workplace violence.
All retailers have an “Evacuation Plan” for employees and
customers in the event of a fire.
If a fire occurs in your store you may have to get out in dark
and difficult conditions. This can be especially challenging if
your colleagues and customers are females, children, older or
infirm.
Escaping from a fire will be a lot easier if you are aware of
the fire escape plan and emergency routes.
8. SECURITY SYSTEM
As a retailer focusing on the problem of what's known in the
industry as loss prevention, you basically have three methods at
your disposal to slow the shoplifters down:
You can watch everyone in the store like a hawk and make sure
they don't steal anything. You can do that using security guards
and/or video surveillance systems. You can make things hard to
remove from the store by bolting them down, attaching cables,
putting things in display cases and behind the counter
In this unit we will discuss about Security Guards & Security Bars,
Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS), Radio Frequency
Identification, (RFID) Systems, Electro-magnetic Systems.
