"During the very wet summer of 2012, I got an urgent call about flooding at Moorbridge Lane in
Nottinghamshire, where water was gushing from the back of St. Luke’s Church. It was easy to see what
was causing the flooding – the wall at the back of the church had been pushed over by vandals and
was in the process of being rebuilt. The wall had acted as a barrier to the floodplain of a tributary from
the Boundary Brook, but its collapse meant the tributary was entering the grounds of the church,
flooding through them and out of the gates onto Moorbridge Lane. The escaping water meant there was
a potential flood risk to 25 properties. The vicar and a few of his parishioners were trying unsuccessfully
to stop the flow. The churchyard was a gravelled area that spanned approximately 12m, with an
adjoining garden wall to one side and the church building on the other. We had recently purchased
three Water-Gate & trade barriers and to me it seemed a perfect opportunity to try them out in a real
incident. I was working with an experienced colleague who is not renowned for his opinion of new
innovative products. Unrolling the barrier took about two minutes, and a bit of adjusting at each end
where it lay against the walls took another couple of minutes. I was amazed at how easily it rolled out
and the way it sealed. Within five minutes we had stopped the flow of water, at about 150mm deep,
from getting onto the road. The Reverend and his flock could not believe what they had seen. One of
the group looked up to the heavens and thanked the Lord! "Never mind the Lord" my colleague replied.
"This Water-Gate™ flood barrier performed the miracle! Now, what about a cuppa?"
