  2. 2. Earthquake Strikes <ul><li>Quake struck Christchurch on Tuesday (Feb. 22) at 12:51 pm local time </li></ul><ul><li>6.3 magnitude earthquake </li></ul><ul><li>Streets were very busy </li></ul><ul><li>Called country’s biggest disaster in 80 years </li></ul>

Results of Quake <ul><li>148 people have died, with 50 still missing </li></ul><ul><li>About 120 people were forced to be amputated in order to be rescued </li></ul><ul><li>estimated total cost of damage is about $12bn (£7.4bn), according to the Associated Press news agency </li></ul><ul><li>80% of people in Christchurch w/out water </li></ul><ul><li>Increase in premature labor </li></ul><ul><li>At least a third of the buildings in Christchurch need to be demolished, along w/ 100s of suburban homes </li></ul>

Worst Hit Building: Canterbury Television Building <ul><li>Collapsed during quake, lift cavity caught on fire </li></ul><ul><li>More than 100 people may have died in the building </li></ul><ul><li>Many of the dead and missing were faculty and students at the King's Education school for English language students drawn from around Asia and elsewhere </li></ul><ul><li>On 23 February, police decided the damage was not survivable, and rescue efforts at the building were suspended </li></ul>Before After
