Staff Team compete in Future Problem Solving Internationals | 10 June, 2016
Congratulations to St Peters Teachers ­ Mrs Austin, Mrs Belchamber,
Mrs Batchelor and Mr Canfield, who competed in the Future Problem
Solving International competition on 4­5 June with excellent results. Up
against competitors from around the world, our St Peters team placed
third for their Action Plan and second for the booklet on the topic,
“Alternative Energies”.
“We were allowed to compete from Brisbane virtually while the full
international competition was taking place in Kentucky, United States,”
Mr Canfield explained.
Their challenge was to analyse issues with an energy crisis in the Galapagos Islands in the year 2035 and come
up with alternative energy creation methods for this scenario.
“We had two hours to read, discuss and write our booklet proposal. This proposal was hastily scanned and sent
for marking in the US so that it could be marked along with other international entries,” Mr Canfield said.
In the next phase, the team had only three hours to prepare a presentation to explain the context of the energy
crisis and outline their Action Plan to solve it.
“For the presentation of the Action Plan (PAP) we had two fantastic year nine students, Isabelle and Rupert,
assisting as ‘magics.’ The role for them was to aid us in preparation and then be part of the presentation,” Mr
Canfield said.
The team placed third for their Action Plan presentation and they placed second for the booklet.
“We are all very pleased with our excellent result and are looking forward to passing on our experience to the
Future Problem students we teach in Years 2 to 10,” Mr Canfield said with pride.
