Introduction
For our Statistics assignment we were given the task of conducting a survey by assuming
“Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia” (Malaysian Health Ministry) engaged us to conduct a survey.
They would like to study the understanding level of young female/male adults aged between 21
to 25 and adults aged 26 to 30 on one of the common chronic diseases in Malaysia.
We listed out the common chronic diseases in Malaysia such as Heart Disease, Obesity,
Diabetes, Kidney failure and Kidney stones. We ruled out Diabetes to be the most suitable
disease to carry out our research.
Our group chose to examine the comprehension of Diabetes between Females aged 21-25 and
26-30. By doing so, we feel that we will get a better understanding whether or not those
(women) living in Malaysia are aware of the effects of Diabetes or have any knowledge of the
disease at all. We would also like to find out which age group is more comprehensive than the
other.
We had prepared survey forms that have been handed out to the public and later collated
together to obtain values in order for us to create statistical data. This statistical data was later
translated into a clear and concise infographic A2 board that displays our findings.
Page 2
Objectives
 To work with each group member cooperatively by listening to each person’s ideas and
values carefully
 To create a clear and concise A2 infographic which displays all data gathered from all
answered questionnaire papers
 To convey our ideas and findings from our data
 To apply Statistical concepts such as the Tally system, Mean, Median and Mode
 To identify which method is more suitable to use(Mean, Median and Mode) in order to
obtain comprehensive data
 To create a clear survey form
 To hand out all questionnaires to Females aged 21-25 and 26-30 for accurate results
 To find out which age group has a higher comprehension of Diabetes than the other
Page 3
Methodology
16/10/2014 Thursday - We were briefed in class about assignment 2 by our lecturer Ms.
Ann See Peng. After class we formed a group of 3: Shaun, Chong Yih and Rajan.
We then commenced work by discussing about the common chronic diseases.
We listed out the common chronic diseases in Malaysia such as Heart Disease, Obesity,
Diabetes, Kidney failure and Kidney stones. We ruled out Diabetes to be the most
suitable disease to carry out our research.
We studied about Diabetes in Malaysia and found some interesting facts from online
sources (shown below)
According to Diabetes Malaysia 2007, nearly 1.2 million people in Malaysia have
diabetes. Unfortunately, more than half are not aware that they have the disease. About
650,000 people will be diagnosed this year.
The above statement from Diabetes Malaysia stresses that there is an increased number
of Malaysians that are unaware that they have diabetes. This information sparked our
minds to come up with the objective to create a questionnaire which focuses on the
comprehension of diabetes.
Another source from a slide show (fig.1) prepared by a Physician at Kementerian
Kesihatan Malaysia, shows a huge increase of adults with high blood sugar in the ASEAN
region showing Malaysia having an alarming percentage. Leading us to assume
Malaysians are incomprehensive about the disease and seem to take it lightly.
(fig.1)
Page 4
6/11/2014 Thursday - We chose to concentrate on the Female gender.
10/11/2014 Monday - We created a questionnaire. All the questions that we had
prepared were clear however we found that question 11 didn’t really make sense.
Initially question 11 asks, Can children inherit diabetes from their parents? We later
realized that the question was very open ended. The answer can be both yes and no as
it really depends on the genes of either parent. So we decided to change the question
by asking, Can Diabetes be cured?(considered a trick question)
After making final adjustments to the questionnaire we printed 150(targeted amount)
copies and went around Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus to distribute them to
women around the age groups of 21-25 and 26-30.
We distributed the survey forms in the Students Life Centre(SLC), beside the library, the
long walkway opposite the Grand hall and blocks C and E
We received most of our responses in the “SLC” as there were many students who were
just chatting or having a rest and seemed unoccupied. It was a real task of getting
women of the right age to answer the forms as many aged 18-20 were asked to hand
their forms back to us as their age wasn’t what met our requirements. Making sure that
all ages filled by the women were within the age range, we managed to get all 150
survey forms complete in 3 days.
13/11/2014 Thursday - We gathered all answered questionnaires and began to
tabulate them using the very systematic Tally System. The Tally system made it clear for
us to calculate the answers for each question.
After serious browsing and tabulating the data we found out that there were 86 females
that are age 21 to 25 and 64 females that were age 26 to 30.
Gathering all
questionnaires,
tallying
Page 5
Page 6
15/11/2014 Saturday – We calculated the percentage of each questions in the survey
form with both their right and wrong answers. Separating the age groups as well.
Page 7
Page 8
The above calculations are the total number of the answer from both group of females aged
between 21-25 and 25-30 by using (number of the answer /total number of females x 100) To
get the percentage of every answer so that we can use to observe the differences of those
answers between both groups of females.
Page 9
17/11/2014 Monday – Discussed about how to plan, structure and create the
infographic with gathered data. We used Adobe Photoshop as our main software to
create the infographic.
18/11/2014 Tuesday – Completed the infographic with clear evidence of findings
Page 10
17/11/2014 Monday – Printed the infographic into an A2 sized board.

Softcopy of Questionnaire
The purpose of this survey form is to gather information and examine the comprehension of
Diabetes among Females aged 21-25 and 26-30. Your participation in this research project is entirely
voluntary. In order for the information you provide to be useful, it is important that you answer these
questions fully and candidly. To ensure confidentiality of your responses please return this
questionnaire immediately as soon as it is filled up. (Please circle your answers)
Part A

A. Insulin C. Aldosterone
B. Luteinising hormone D. Gastrin
Part B – facts on the effects of Diabetes
Questions 13-15 are quick facts on the effects of Diabetes. Please take a moment to read them carefully.
Once read, please be honest in providing your answers.
13) Tobacco smoking
Tobacco smoking is the second single most important factor in the development of
complications of the eyes, kidneys and blood vessels. It is extremely unusual for a diabetic to
have a leg amputated due to blocked blood vessels unless they were smokers.
□ Yea I knew that □ Never knew that!
14) Overweight and high blood fats
High blood fats and being overweight tend to accelerate the build-up of fat in the lining of the
blood vessels, accelerating the blockage of arteries.
□ Yea I knew that □ Never knew that!
15) Diabetes and women’s health
There is no evidence to suggest that women with diabetes encounter more sexual difficulties
than other women. Diabetic women often report a cyclical change in their insulin requirements
related to the menstrual cycle. High blood glucose levels can have a temporarily adverse effect
on the sexual aspects of a woman’s life. Diabetes increases the risk of thrush.
□ Yea I knew that □ Never knew that!
Thank you for your time
For females aged 21-25
Mean = (6x65) + (7x20) + (5x1)
86
= 390+140+5
86
= 6.2209
For females aged 26-30
Mean = (6x30) + (7x16) + (5x18)
64
= 180+112+90
64
= 5.9687
Page 13
Analysis
The formulas used to calculate the data:
We chose to apply the Mean formula as we aimed to identify average values.
Page 14
Conclusion
From our findings we found that a majority of the younger aged women could not answer
specific questions, this tells us that they are still unaware of the facts and effects of Diabetes as
compared to women aged 26-30.
The questions that we made were alright, they lead us to obtaining good results however we
found that certain questions such as question 1 and 6 were quite irrelevant.
Question 1 requires the person to check the box which states their ethnicity. We realized that
the ethnicity of the females didn’t really matter as it did not contribute to our calculations at
all. The question did, however, provide us with supporting information about the demographics
and was interesting for us to see a varying crowd that contributed to filling up our
questionnaires.
Question 6 asks if the person has had any family members or friends that have/had suffered
from diabetes. This question did not contribute to our calculations as well however we got to
see if the rates of diabetes is high or not among those living in Malaysia. This was actually quite
hard to decipher as for females aged 21-25, 85% stated that they’ve never known anyone who
has had the disease, it was 60.94 % for females aged 26-30.
We as a group feel that Diabetes is a serious chronic disease that should never be taken for
granted. We also feel that the government and other private health organizations should run
more health campaigns to spread the awareness on the effects of Diabetes so that there will be
a reduction in the percentage of Malaysian adults with high blood sugar in the ASEAN region
and for Malaysia in general

  • 3. Page 1 Introduction For our Statistics assignment we were given the task of conducting a survey by assuming “Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia” (Malaysian Health Ministry) engaged us to conduct a survey. They would like to study the understanding level of young female/male adults aged between 21 to 25 and adults aged 26 to 30 on one of the common chronic diseases in Malaysia. We listed out the common chronic diseases in Malaysia such as Heart Disease, Obesity, Diabetes, Kidney failure and Kidney stones. We ruled out Diabetes to be the most suitable disease to carry out our research. Our group chose to examine the comprehension of Diabetes between Females aged 21-25 and 26-30. By doing so, we feel that we will get a better understanding whether or not those (women) living in Malaysia are aware of the effects of Diabetes or have any knowledge of the disease at all. We would also like to find out which age group is more comprehensive than the other. We had prepared survey forms that have been handed out to the public and later collated together to obtain values in order for us to create statistical data. This statistical data was later translated into a clear and concise infographic A2 board that displays our findings.
  • 4. Page 2 Objectives  To work with each group member cooperatively by listening to each person’s ideas and values carefully  To create a clear and concise A2 infographic which displays all data gathered from all answered questionnaire papers  To convey our ideas and findings from our data  To apply Statistical concepts such as the Tally system, Mean, Median and Mode  To identify which method is more suitable to use(Mean, Median and Mode) in order to obtain comprehensive data  To create a clear survey form  To hand out all questionnaires to Females aged 21-25 and 26-30 for accurate results  To find out which age group has a higher comprehension of Diabetes than the other
  • 5. Page 3 Methodology 16/10/2014 Thursday - We were briefed in class about assignment 2 by our lecturer Ms. Ann See Peng. After class we formed a group of 3: Shaun, Chong Yih and Rajan. We then commenced work by discussing about the common chronic diseases. We listed out the common chronic diseases in Malaysia such as Heart Disease, Obesity, Diabetes, Kidney failure and Kidney stones. We ruled out Diabetes to be the most suitable disease to carry out our research. We studied about Diabetes in Malaysia and found some interesting facts from online sources (shown below) According to Diabetes Malaysia 2007, nearly 1.2 million people in Malaysia have diabetes. Unfortunately, more than half are not aware that they have the disease. About 650,000 people will be diagnosed this year. The above statement from Diabetes Malaysia stresses that there is an increased number of Malaysians that are unaware that they have diabetes. This information sparked our minds to come up with the objective to create a questionnaire which focuses on the comprehension of diabetes. Another source from a slide show (fig.1) prepared by a Physician at Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia, shows a huge increase of adults with high blood sugar in the ASEAN region showing Malaysia having an alarming percentage. Leading us to assume Malaysians are incomprehensive about the disease and seem to take it lightly. (fig.1)
  • 6. Page 4 6/11/2014 Thursday - We chose to concentrate on the Female gender. 10/11/2014 Monday - We created a questionnaire. All the questions that we had prepared were clear however we found that question 11 didn’t really make sense. Initially question 11 asks, Can children inherit diabetes from their parents? We later realized that the question was very open ended. The answer can be both yes and no as it really depends on the genes of either parent. So we decided to change the question by asking, Can Diabetes be cured?(considered a trick question) After making final adjustments to the questionnaire we printed 150(targeted amount) copies and went around Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus to distribute them to women around the age groups of 21-25 and 26-30. We distributed the survey forms in the Students Life Centre(SLC), beside the library, the long walkway opposite the Grand hall and blocks C and E We received most of our responses in the “SLC” as there were many students who were just chatting or having a rest and seemed unoccupied. It was a real task of getting women of the right age to answer the forms as many aged 18-20 were asked to hand their forms back to us as their age wasn’t what met our requirements. Making sure that all ages filled by the women were within the age range, we managed to get all 150 survey forms complete in 3 days.
  • 7. 13/11/2014 Thursday - We gathered all answered questionnaires and began to tabulate them using the very systematic Tally System. The Tally system made it clear for us to calculate the answers for each question. After serious browsing and tabulating the data we found out that there were 86 females that are age 21 to 25 and 64 females that were age 26 to 30. Gathering all questionnaires, tallying Page 5
  • 9. 15/11/2014 Saturday – We calculated the percentage of each questions in the survey form with both their right and wrong answers. Separating the age groups as well. Page 7
  • 11. The above calculations are the total number of the answer from both group of females aged between 21-25 and 25-30 by using (number of the answer /total number of females x 100) To get the percentage of every answer so that we can use to observe the differences of those answers between both groups of females. Page 9
  • 12. 17/11/2014 Monday – Discussed about how to plan, structure and create the infographic with gathered data. We used Adobe Photoshop as our main software to create the infographic. 18/11/2014 Tuesday – Completed the infographic with clear evidence of findings Page 10 17/11/2014 Monday – Printed the infographic into an A2 sized board.
  • 13. Page 11 Softcopy of Questionnaire The purpose of this survey form is to gather information and examine the comprehension of Diabetes among Females aged 21-25 and 26-30. Once read, please be honest in providing your answers. 13) Tobacco smoking Tobacco smoking is the second single most important factor in the development of complications of the eyes, kidneys and blood vessels. It is extremely unusual for a diabetic to have a leg amputated due to blocked blood vessels unless they were smokers. □ Yea I knew that □ Never knew that! 14) Overweight and high blood fats High blood fats and being overweight tend to accelerate the build-up of fat in the lining of the blood vessels, accelerating the blockage of arteries. □ Yea I knew that □ Never knew that! 15) Diabetes and women’s health There is no evidence to suggest that women with diabetes encounter more sexual difficulties than other women. Diabetic women often report a cyclical change in their insulin requirements related to the menstrual cycle. High blood glucose levels can have a temporarily adverse effect on the sexual aspects of a woman’s life. Diabetes increases the risk of thrush. □ Yea I knew that □ Never knew that! Thank you for your time
  • 15. For females aged 21-25 Mean = (6x65) + (7x20) + (5x1) 86 = 390+140+5 86 = 6.2209 For females aged 26-30 Mean = (6x30) + (7x16) + (5x18) 64 = 180+112+90 64 = 5.9687 Page 13 Analysis The formulas used to calculate the data: We chose to apply the Mean formula as we aimed to identify average values.
  • 16. Page 14 Conclusion From our findings we found that a majority of the younger aged women could not answer specific questions, this tells us that they are still unaware of the facts and effects of Diabetes as compared to women aged 26-30. The questions that we made were alright, they lead us to obtaining good results however we found that certain questions such as question 1 and 6 were quite irrelevant. Question 1 requires the person to check the box which states their ethnicity. We realized that the ethnicity of the females didn’t really matter as it did not contribute to our calculations at all. The question did, however, provide us with supporting information about the demographics and was interesting for us to see a varying crowd that contributed to filling up our questionnaires. Question 6 asks if the person has had any family members or friends that have/had suffered from diabetes. This question did not contribute to our calculations as well however we got to see if the rates of diabetes is high or not among those living in Malaysia. This was actually quite hard to decipher as for females aged 21-25, 85% stated that they’ve never known anyone who has had the disease, it was 60.94 % for females aged 26-30. We as a group feel that Diabetes is a serious chronic disease that should never be taken for granted. We also feel that the government and other private health organizations should run more health campaigns to spread the awareness on the effects of Diabetes so that there will be a reduction in the percentage of Malaysian adults with high blood sugar in the ASEAN region and for Malaysia in general
