XX ultrasonic sensors
Technologies
• Detection of any materials without contact (no touch)
• Insensitive to color, transparency, and coefficient
of reflection
• Very good resistance to industrial environments+
• Sensitive to important changes of temperature,
air flow, humidity
• Sound-absorptive materials an oddly-shaped objects
are difficult to detect

Overview — Inductive sensors
Ultrasonic sensors enable detection, without contact, of any object
irrespective of its:
• Material (metal, plastic, wood, cardboard, etc.)
• Nature (solid, liquid, powder, etc.)
• Color
• Degree of transparency
Brand name:
• OsiSenseTM
XX
Telemecanique Sensors – May 2016 7
7
Technical key points — Sensing range
• Sensing range Sd
• Zone in which the sensor is sensitive to objects
• Nominal sensing distance Sn
• The rated operating distance for which the sensor
has been designed; always given for a standard
metal target
• Assured operating distance Sa
• Also called sensing window, this is the operating zone
of the sensor (fixed or adjustable by teach mode)
• Blind zone
• Zone in which no object can be reliably detected
Telemecanique Sensors – May 2016 8
8
Technical key points — Electrical function
• Output function
• Normally open (NO)
̶ Corresponds to a sensor whose output changes
to the closed state when an object is present
in the operating zone
• Normally closed (NC)
̶ Corresponds to a sensor whose output changes
to the open state when an object is present
in the operating zone
• Complementary outputs (NO + NC)
̶ Corresponds to a sensor with a normally
closed output and a normally open output
Telemecanique Sensors – May 2016 9
9
Technical key points — Output function
• 3-wire type DC
• NO or NC output, PNP or NPN
• 4-wire type DC
• NO and NC complementary outputs, PNP or NPN
• 4-wire type DC
• NO, PNP + NPN
• Specific output signals, analog type
Telemecanique Sensors – May 2016 10
10
Discrete ultrasonic
Discrete ultrasonic sensors detect
any object without physical contact,
irrespective of:
• Material (metal, plastic, wood, cardboard, etc.)
• Nature (solid, liquid, powder, etc.), color,
degree of transparency
Discrete sensors are available in the type
shown at right.
Telemecanique Sensors – May 2016 11
11
Analog ultrasonic
Analog ultrasonic sensors are used when
detecting variable levels.
They are available in the types shown at right.
Telemecanique Sensors – May 2016 12
12
Analogue ultrasonic
• Sensor with solid-state discrete output
• Cylindrical or flat formats
• Sensing distances: 10 cm to 8 m
• Sensor for level monitoring
• For controlling 2 levels (emptying and filling levels)
• Cylindrical formats Ø 18 and Ø 30 mm
• Sensing distance from 50 cm to 2 m (adjustable)
• Sensor with analog output
• Analog output 4 – 20 mA or 0 – 10 V
• Cylindrical or flat format
• Sensing distances from 50 cm to 8 m (adjustable)
Telemecanique Sensors – May 2016 13

14
How to choose a ultrasonic sensor?
1. Choose a body according to environment and sensing distance
• Cylindrical or flat
• Plastic or stainless steel
• 5 cm to 8 m
2. Choose the electrical function
• According to the automated function to achieve
̶ NO, NC, NO+NC, or analog
• According to the "load" compatibility (contactor, PL, etc.)
̶ DC 3/4 wires PNP, NPN or 4 – 20 mA, 0 – 10 V
3. Choose the electrical connection according to habits (geographical use)
• Cable or connector
