A short presentation to outline the conventions of music websites using Lenka's website to highlight creative choices made during the production of Ava's website
2. The homepage provides multiple
opportunities for the visitor to immerse
themselves and interact with the world
of the artist.
iTunes advertisement to promote the
single – simultaneously promotes iTunes
as an institutional identity
Visually attractive,
with photographs/
moving images
Album
available to
purchase
Opportunity
to sign up to
a regular
newsletter
Twitter feed
Advertising the tour with the
countdown and a link to
tickets creates yet another
purchase opportunity
Merchandise
links directly to
the tour and thus
we strategically
placed this
purchase
opportunity here
3. A convention of music artists’ websites is a
music page, whereby artists are able to
promote albums, both old and new, as well as
singles and collaborations
The album art is presented in an
eye-catching way, and it
therefore becomes memorable
and can be instantly associated
with the artist
Track lists and the
opportunity to listen
to the tracks provide
interactivity and a
potential purchasing
opportunity
Having researched
independent artists and
record labels, we found it
was conventional for the
artist to release an EP
prior to releasing a full
studio album. Therefore,
we created an EP for Ava
entitled Paper On The Wall
4. New artists, particularly those whose target
audiences are fairly young, conventionally
use blogs and a variety of social media
networks to provide their audience with an
interactive experience
We also created a Tumblr for Ava, which was a
more visual, artistic blog. In hindsight, I would
also have created a Pinterest account, as not
only is this a creative visual network, but is also
a fast-growing one
Vertical blogs allow fans to
follow what is happening in the
world of the artist
Facebook pages are particularly
useful for sharing photographs and
videos, organising competitions
and promoting tour tickets
The benefits of using Twitter are
mainly associated with allowing
the fan to interact with the artist
5. Conventionally, artists produce
merchandise as an alternative source of
revenue, and it is often marketed and
sold alongside concert/ event tickets
In my research of indie artists, I found that many tailored
their merchandise to the interests of their core target
audience; for example, A Fine Frenzy released an
illustrated eBook along with their album to reflect the
target audience’s interest in literature and art. Thus, we
created sheet music and a biscuit tin to echo the
interests of our target audience, two of which were
playing music and baking
