newspaper from 1949.
Her portraits, primarily photographed in black and white and only usingavailable
light at the time of the shot, received widespread critical acclaim around the world.
Her work wasdescribed at the end of her life to be “a kind of English Cartier-
Bresson’and from a website that she ‘photographed the great and the good, the rich
and the poor, the ordinary and extraordinary withacompassionate and gentle eye.’

JaneBown studied photography at Guildford Schoolof Art, after she received and
entitled to an education grant from her chart corrector with the WRNS, which
included arole in plotting the D-Day invasion. And taughtby Ifor Thomas.
In her career afterwardsin photography, she photographed many subjects including
HenriCartier-Bresson, John Lennon, Orson Welles, MargaretThatcher, Eve Arnold
and many more.
