In this monthly report we will analyze the latest developments in the major tight gas basins in the US, including the Marcellus, the Haynesville and the Utica.
We will cover the following trends:
1- Drilling activity
2- Total gas production
3- The top operators
4- Productivity & completion design

basins in the US, including the Marcellus, the Haynesville and the Utica.
We will cover the following trends:
1- Drilling activity
2- Total gas production

5- Well productivity comparison (Haynesville vs. Marcellus)
6- Productivity ranking of Haynesville Operators
The horizontal rig count has sharply fallen in the major tight gas basins, from 140
(April 2019) to 89 last week. Almost half of these rigs are now in the Haynesville
(47%).

3. The following dashboard gives an overview of the total gas production in the major
US tight oil & gas basins, through September.
The basins in the top 5 all contributed to the strong growth in output over the last
3 years.

The map on the right displays the well locations of these operators. Only
Chesapeake has significant operations outside Appalachia.
5. The following overview shows how well productivity and completion designs have
changed in recent years in the top 3 gas plays. The top chart shows the average
amount of natural gas recovered in the first 12 months, by production start year.
Productivity growth based on this metric was strongest in the Utica, where gas wells
that were completed in 2018 recovered on average just over 4.5 Bcf of natural gas
in their first year.
The Utica has now also the longest wells (over 10K feet), although most proppants
are used in the Haynesville (see the 2 charts above).

6. 5) Well productivity comparison (Haynesville vs. Marcellus)
Although the Utica may now have the wells with the best initial performance, most
of the drilling is in the Haynesville and the Marcellus, which are much larger plays.
The chart below visualizes the change in well productivity in these 2 basins. The
average flow rate is plotted against cumulative gas production. Only horizontal gas
wells are selected that began production in either 2014 or 2018.
Well performance clearly increased in both basins between these years but was
especially large in the Haynesville. This was probably closely related to the 3-fold
increase in proppant use in the same time frame.

7. 6) Productivity ranking of Haynesville Operators
The following dashboard sheds light on the question of which operators have the
best (and worst) performing wells in the Haynesville. The left side shows the loca-
tion of all the horizontal gas wells that were completed since 2007. The wells are
colored by the cumulative gas recovered in the first 2 years (red being more).
On the right you can find the ranking of all the operators in this area, with at least
10 operated wells. Vine, with 275 operated wells, is in the lead, as its wells recov-
ered on average 3.9 Bcf of natural gas in the first 12 months. The thickness of the
lines indicates the relative well count.
