INTRODUCTION
‘We are very proud of the progress we have made
since we were first granted our Athena Swan
Silver status back in 2010. Its renewal this year
symbolises the Department’s continuing efforts
to support and promote our female academics.’
Professor Mike Finnis, who
was awarded the Alexander
von Humboldt Foundation’s
Humboldt Research Award

Highlights of the past year include the
promotions of Dr Christopher Gourlay
to Senior Lecturer, Dr Sandrine Heutz to
Reader in Functional Molecular Materials,
Dr Arash Mostofi to Reader in Theory and
Simulation of Materials, Dr Stephen Skinner
to Professor of Materials Chemistry, Dr Julian
Jones to Professor of Biomaterials and Dr
Natalie Stingelin to Professor of Functional
Organic Materials. These promotions are the
end product of much hard work, dedication

Other highlights include:
the renewal of our Athena Swan
Silver status. This symbolises the
Department’s continuing efforts to
support and promote females in Science
and Engineering, and we are very proud
of the progress we have made since we
were first granted our Silver status back
in 2010. Our efforts are now focused on
maintaining the collegial environment
that we have worked hard to cultivate
within the Department of Materials, and
ensuring that all staff experience the
benefits of this supportive culture. It is
notable that, in our last hiring round,
we received 135 applications for two
positions and ended up appointing
three outstanding applicants – all of
whom were women.
Professor Molly Stevens’ ongoing
media acclaim which included places
in The Wired Smart List (2013), Cells’ 40
under 40 list (2014) and, more recently,
in the London Evening Standard’slist
of The 1000 Most Influential Londoners

people of international standing and
by building on the already extensive
links to other departments and research
centres and institutes worldwide,
including: KAUST, NUS, ETH Zurich,
University of Erlangen-Nuremberg,
Max Planck Institutes, Nagoya Institute
of Technology, MIT, Case Western
Reserve University, American National
Laboratories (e.g. Oak Ridge), CSIRO,
ANSTO and the University of Queensland,
to name a few.
The Department currently has three
active spin-out companies: Ceres Power
(cerespower.com), Emisens (emisens.
com) and Eva Diagnostics (evadiagnostics.
com) which were set up to commercialise
the products of departmental research.
Ceres Power was floated in 2004 to
develop Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs) and
is a world leader in the next generation
of fuel cell technology. Emisens was
built on work carried out on microwave
dielectric resonators and these form a
key component in scanning devices for
liquid explosives at airports. Our newest
start-up is Eva Diagnostics (launched in
2014), which manufactures devices that
can diagnose and differentiate macrocytic,
normocytic and microcytic anaemia from
a single drop of blood in a matter of
seconds.

We have a superb track record in acquiring new
equipment, maintaining all our facilities and enabling
equipment sharing. Over the last five years, we have
invested over £8M in world-class processing and
characterisation equipment.
or equivalent and we continue to attract
the best students and produce highly
motivated, skilled, employable graduates.
Addressing and improving the
student experience is at the heart of the
Department’s teaching strategy. The results
of the National Student Survey 2014 were
extremely positive and showed that,
overall, 88% of our students were satisfied
with their experience, a 3% increase
since 2013. Furthermore, there was a
notable satisfaction increase in teaching
(+5%), assessment and feedback (+10%),
organisation and management (+5%) and
Students’ Union (+4%). Although this is
an excellent result, we believe that we can
further improve on these satisfaction levels
with concentrated and coordinated effort.
Our PhD student intake in 2013–14
period was 38 which brings our total
PhD number to 151. We also graduated 31
students (see Degree Awards on page 36)
with two in particular, Dr Daming Wang
and Dr Louise Connell, passing their vivas
with no corrections. This is no mean feat!
We congratulate all our students and wish
them bright and successful futures.
The Department continues to support
its students via numerous scholarships
and bursaries. These are made available
largely due to the generosity of various
companies and charities including the
Armourers and Brasiers’ Company, AWE,
Rolls-Royce plc and TATA to name a few,
and kind donations made to the Harvey
Flower Undergraduate Research Scholarship
Fund, set up in 2007 in honour of the
late Professor Harvey Flower. The funds
mainly enable our undergraduates and
postgraduates to spend time abroad at
high quality research institutions and/or to
assist them with travel costs to industrial
placements and conferences. There are
also various departmental scholarships
available including five recently established
MEng undergraduate scholarships as well
as five departmental Materials Research
Scholarships and five fully-funded
studentships for our postgraduate students.
The total number of research assistants,
postdoctoral research associates and
research fellows in our Department has
increased from 69 in 2012–13 to 100 in
the 2013–14 academic session. Of the 91
postdoctoral research staff, approximately
20% are on highly competitive fellowships.
Our researchers are highly valued for
their tremendous contribution to the
research, teaching and diverse academic
life of the Department. They are at a
crucial stage in their careers and we are
committed to providing them with support
and development opportunities. See
Postdoctoral on page 54.

This includes new instruments to probe
the chemistry of surfaces (e.g. secondary
ion mass spectroscopy – low energy ion
scattering and ambient pressure X-ray
photoelectron spectroscopy), new electron
microscopes (e.g. Auriga FEG-SEM and
Zeiss TEM and two Bruker X-ray sets as well
as equipment to explore the properties of
materials from Hz to THz (e.g. a TeraView
TPSSpectra 3000 system and a Rohde
Schwarz ZVA top benchmarkVector
Network Analyser (VNA)). Through our
investment, we are able to make materials
by a huge range of methods including wet
chemistry, atomic layer deposition and
self-assembly by vacuum techniques. Our
facilities and equipment are constantly
reviewed, keeping our Department at the
cutting-edge of Materials Science research.
The Department of Materials continues
to enhance its excellent teaching
programme. During 2013–14, we enrolled
77 new undergraduates which brings the
total, in the report period, to over 250. In
2013–14, 69 students graduated with BEng
or MEng Honours, 79% of whom obtained
a First or Upper Second class degree.
See Degree Awards on page 36.

NationalWomen in
Engineering Day
The Department was the only
one in the Faculty of Engineering
to hold an outreach event to
celebrate the first ever National
Women in Engineering Day. 30
Key Stage 3 students (aged 11 to
14) attended a full day of hands-
on activities, reciprocal learning
tasks and presentation skills all
based around the contributions
that women in Materials Science
and engineering have made to
our everyday lives. The event
was supported by Professor
Ann Muggeridge, the Faculty
Ambassador for Women, and
by visiting lecturer for the
Department and supporter of
diversity in engineering, Dame
Sue Ion OBE FREng.
