2. Philosophy of Special Education
“No matter the child’s level of ability, children will do best in the future if you help them
develop practical skills now” -Amy Baskin
The best education possible should be afforded to every student regardless of
special needs. Being a Special Education Teacher is one of the most important jobs in the
world. It has always been my passion to help each child to discover their individual gifts
and talents needed to reach their full potential. People often focus on the difficulties of
special needs children. Yet, I believe the focus should be on the various gifts of the child.
Educating students requires discipline. The same discipline must be shown by the
students. I will be an example that the class can immolate. Furthermore, realizing that
each and every child comes from various situations and homes means that one way of
teaching is not conducive. My way of teaching will be exciting, innovative and full of
positive reinforcement so that the children feel comfortable and confident. Also, I will
establish several avenues for obtaining knowledge through incorporating all learning
styles into my instruction. If an administrator were to enter my classroom, they would see
a confident educator teaching very engaged students. The administrator will also see a
safe environment as well as a clean classroom atmosphere conducive for learning.
Also, the special educator must remember that no two students are the same and
thus each student has individual needs. My goal is to provide each student with an
individual education program (IEP) design for the need of the student. This plan will be
in accordance with IDEA, Section 504 and The Americans with Disabilities Act.
Every child is part of a community and should be provided the opportunity to
participate in the same events and chances as every other community member regardless
of any physical or mental limitations. My background in mental health and social services
provides experience in being aware of student’s abilities and disabilities. I will strive to
provide the students with the tools necessary to transition from the school to becoming
functional members in the community. I will work collectively with other teachers,
parents, administrators, therapists, and community support staff in Admission, Review,
and Dismissal (ARD) meetings to ensure that we are meeting the needs of the students.
The laws and verbiage of Special Education are very confusing. It is imperative
that families with special needs children stay well informed about the necessary tools and
appropriate services. Also, make educated decisions about the correct direction for the
children. As an advocator, I strive to stay current on new laws regarding disability rights.
I will advocate for their Civil Rights and educational needs for the students and their
families. In conclusion, I believe where others see disabilities, I see opportunities. With a
concise plan, positive teachers, parental involvement, and necessary supports we have the
opportunity to achieve the student’s goals. My personal and professional experiences will
help guide students in the right direction for a promising and engaging future.
