2. Dundrum began as part of Taney Parish during early Christian
Ireland when Saint Naihi founded a church there in the 8th century
(700-799 AD).
The bishop for this Church was responsible for the neighbouring
areas of Rathfarnham, Donnybrook and Kilgobbin.
The name Dundrum comes from Dun Druma; which means the
fort on the ridge.

5. In the 13th (1200-1299 AD) century Dundrum castle was built by
Sir John De Clahull, who was the Marshal of the Lordship of
Leinster (Dublin and its surrounding counties). This was a noble title
which gave him and his family ownership of a large area of land.
Why do you think the castle was built?
Was it just for a place to live or did it have a purpose?
6.
7. In 1641 the castle was captured and badly damaged during wars
that went on at this time.
In 1653 it was taken over by Isaac Dobson, a Lieutenant-
Colonel, who rebuilt and repaired it.
Over the years the castle has had many owners and has been since
turned into a large residence/house built by Dr Arthur Goff.
8. What can you remember about the castle?
Why did it have so many owners?
Is it still a castle now?
What should be done with it in the future?
Why do you think the castle was attacked?
