1. Video: Present Simple in the Third Person
Transcript
Hello dear students! Do you know how to use the present simple tense with the
pronouns “he”, “she” and “it”? In this video, I’ll show you how:
First, let’s check this example:
-What does he do in the afternoon?
-He watches “Arrow” on Netflix.
This is a routine activity and for this kind of sentences we use the present simple. Let’s
remember… When do we use Present Simple?
We use the Present Simple for:
• Routine or habitual actions. For example, I brush my teeth three times a day.
• Everyday activities. For example, I go to school on weekdays.
• Timetables. For example, I have math class twice a week.
Now we are going to continue with the correct conjugation of the verbs in third person
and the grammatical structures.
Remember: The verbs change with the third person -he, she, it- in Present Simple in
affirmative form.
For example: He plays basketball twice a week.
Pay attention!
A) If the verb ends in a “CONSONANT” or “E”, we add “S” to the verb in the third
person (he, she, it). For example:
a. She speaks three languages.
b. He plays basketball twice a week.
B) If the verb ends in “SS, X, CH, SH or O”, we add “ES”. For example:
a. She watches her favorite series on Netflix.
b. He goes home very late.
C) If the verb ends in a “CONSONANT” + “Y”, we remove the Y and add “IES”. For
example:
a. She studies Medicine in London.
b. The baby cries all the time.
2. For negative sentences in third person, we use or add the auxiliary -“doesn’t”- and the
verb doesn’t change, we use the base form or infinitive.
For example: “He doesn’t go to the gym once a week”.
For interrogative sentences in third person, we use or add an auxiliary -“does”- and
the verb doesn’t change, we use the base form or infinitive.
For example:
“Does he go to the gym once a week? No, he doesn’t”.
For WH-questions in third person, we use or add an auxiliary -“does”- and the verb
doesn’t change, we use the base form or infinitive.
For example,
• “What does she do on weekdays? She does exercise.”
• “When does he play soccer? He plays soccer on Wednesdays”.
Now you know how to use the present simple in the third person in affirmative,
negative and interrogative forms. Keep practicing to master it! See you next time!
