INTRODUCTION
• As of now, we are living in the 21st century, it could be assumed
that as the basic necessities (food, clothing and shelter) are
important for one’s life, in the same way Internet accessibility is a
basic necessity found in each corner of the world.
• For users, a search engine is accessed through a Browser on the
computer, smartphone, tablet, or another device.
HISTORY OF SEARCH ENGINES
Before search engines were developed, the internet was a collection of FTP (File Transfer Protocol) sites in
which users would navigate to find specific shared files. Search engines began due to the appearance of
WWW (WorldWideWeb) with a view to more easily navigate the web servers and files on the internet.
 The first search engine was Archie (1990) , developed as school project by Alan Emtage ,a student at
McGill University in Montreal.
 In 1991 , Mark McCahill , a student at the University of Minnesota , designed the text based search engine
– Gopher
 In 1993 , Matthew Gray developed Wandex , the first search engine in the form that we know search
engines today.
SEARCH ENGINE-DEFINITIONS
A search engine is a software program or script available
through the internet that searches documents and files
for keywords and returns the results of any files
containing those keywords.
An internet search engine is a service that searches the
internet for specific items, following terms specified by
a user. The items retrieved may be texts , images, audio
files or video files.
SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMISATION
(SEO)
oThe process of maximizing the number of visitors to a particular
website by ensuring that the site appears high on the list of results
returned by a search engine.
oCompanies look to SEO to help gain more awareness and to make their
company higher in the rank of a search engine. SEO is utilised through
search engines such as Google, Yahoo, MSN, Bing, etc. SEO uses
keywords that attract a user to the company.

HOW SEARCH ENGINES WORK?
Search engine is a software program designed to identify and respond to specific questions, called keywords
and populate the page called as SERP (Search Engine Results Page) with relevant information available on
the web.
 Crawl- Content is discovered.
 Indexing-Content is analysed and stored in a database.
 Search Results – User query is fetched and displayed.
CONCLUSION
 The goal of all search engines is to find and organise
distributed data found on the internet.
 A search engine continuously sends out the so-called
Spiders, which start on a homepage of a server and
pursue all links stepwise and finally displays it to the user.
