story by traveler staff. photos: Feliciano Gil
This holiday season, the city of Arcos de la
Frontera and MWR Traveler invite you to witness
one of Andalucia’s most beautiful and inspiring
events of the year. The live nativity scene and
representation of the birth of the Messiah.
On Saturday evening, December 17th at 6:30 pm,
the representation begins with the arrival of the
three kings to Cuesta del Belen street where
the celebration begins.
Following the arrival, visitors will tour about the
historical town center to enjoy over 20 different
scenes with hundreds of performers that will
represent Jesus and the manger, shepherds,
angels and more. The scenes are displayed in
different parts of the monumental part of town.
The local people enact the biblical characters,
producing a beautiful and emotional show.
Arcos de la Frontera will be transformed on this
night from a medieval Spanish frontier town to
Bethlehem of Judea during December.
The scheduled time for conclusion of the event is
set for 11:30 pm. However, the spirit of the
celebration is usually such that the visitors
and performers are known to carry the
representation well into the early hours
of the next morning. Every corner of the
old town quarter will be buzzing with
life, while visitors enjoy the beauty
and magic that the night brings and
the performers inspire.
Do not miss this event which is held
in one of Spain’s most beautiful
pueblos blancos.
