Sara Kate Nash graduated from Indiana University with majors in Journalism and English and a minor in French. She gained valuable experience through hands-on public relations and journalism internships and classes. Nash found her public relations campaign classes and creative writing courses particularly useful. She interned with a public relations firm and marketing company, learning she is not suited for sales but gained knowledge of both fields. Currently, Nash writes for a music blog and is applying to Indiana University law school, hoping to gain legal experience before attending.

1. My name is Sara Kate Nash and I am a graduate of Indiana University. During my time at IU, I
obtained majors in both Journalism and English, as well as a minor in French. Over the four
years I attended IU, I also got lots of experience in the Public Relations and Journalism fields, as
well as plenty of experience with writing, both creatively and editorially. I learned a lot during
my time at IU, but I learned the most through hands-on experiences and internships that I had
the opportunity to partake in.
I took a plethora of journalism and English classes, but the most important classes I took were
the hands-on Public Relations campaigns classes. I took courses called Public Relations
Campaigns, Public Relations for Non-Profits, and Public Relations Research and Planning. In all
three of these courses, I was faced with the challenge of a semester-long project creating a
public relations campaign for a specific company or organization. In two of the classes, I worked
with a group of 5, and in the other class I worked alone. I learned a lot about the way
organizations work and reach out to their publics, and how communications between publics
works. I also learned a lot about working as a team, and was even the team leader for one of
the projects. I have these documents all saved that I can present at any time.
The English classes I took that benefitted me the most were the creative writing classes. My
specialization was creative writing, so I took more than ten classes in that area. I learned how to
write poems, fiction, non-fiction, newspaper and magazine articles, any kind of writing you can
think of, I learned it. I was already a good writer and enjoyed the craft of writing, but now I am
very confident in my writing skills and my craft, as I have spent a lot of time perfecting it over
my college years. In addition to all of these classes, I also had the opportunity to write for the
Indiana Daily Student, the student newspaper at IU, all four years of my college career.
I was also fortunate enough to experience a few different internships during my college career.
I worked with Jim Havey Public Relations as an intern the summer between my sophomore and
junior year. I moved down to Nashville, Tennessee by myself and worked two other jobs at the
same time, as the internship was unpaid. I got to do a lot of interesting things, like help with
publicity for the Great Tennessee Air Show, as well as night clubs like Encore Beach Club and
Surrender in Las Vegas. I attended client meetings at Lucchesse and other small shops around
town. It was a great learning experience for me and I was able to be very independent and do a
lot of work on my own.
The other internship I had was with Principal Marketing Inc., it was a marketing internship. This
internship was a great learning experience for me because it showed me that I am not a sales
person, marketing really isn't for me. However, I did learn a lot about how to market products
and sell them, so although I realized I did not want to find a career in marketing, I learned about
the practice itself.
Currently, I am writing for a blog called Exposed, (weareexposed.com) which is a music blog
targeted towards Electronic Dance Music and the community that surrounds it. EDM is my
passion, and I thoroughly enjoy writing for this blog, as it wraps together two of my favorite
pastimes, writing and music.
I am also in the process of applying to the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law.
I have always been a passionate person, and I have always looked for ways to understand issues
as well as argue my point of view on certain issues. Since I was little, my parents always told me
“you just need to be a lawyer,” as I would argue with them about everything. Now that I am
older and have finished my undergraduate career, I am realizing that Law School truly is the

2. path I want to take, as it is something that I am incredibly passionate about. I do not currently
have any experience in the field, but I am eager to gain some experience and knowledge before
diving in to everything that Law School entails. I am looking for any and all experience I can get,
as this is something I am truly interested in.
I am a hard-working, responsible, motivated person, I work best under pressure and I always
seem to find a way to work around obstacles and setbacks. I am passionate and independent,
and I am very confident in my skill set and feel very grateful to have had the experiences and
opportunities I have had, and am excited for even more.
