Who was Koko?
Koko, a friendly gorilla, was well-known for being able to use GSL “Gorilla Sing Language”. She was born in Woodside, California
and soon taken to San Francisco Zoo. In the 1970´s, Francine Patterson, a student from the University of Illinois, began to look for
a baby gorilla for her project on animal communication. She visited the zoo and met Koko, who was then called by the Japanese
name of Hanabiko. Patterson has written about Koko’s success in several books and magazines.
Koko learnt sign language quickly by following Patterson’s instructions. Some of her words were “food,” “drink,” and “more.” With
years of practice, she got to know about 1,000 signs and understand about 2,000 words spoken to her in English. But she wasn’t
alone! Michael, a gorilla who shared his life with Koko from 1976 until 2000, learned and understood 500 signs with the help of
both Koko and Patterson.
Koko even communicated her wish to have babies, so for her birthday in 1984 she got a kitten called “All Ball”. She was a lovely
parent and loved the kitten as if it were a real baby gorilla, so she received two more kittens. Koko was visited by popular actors all
the time, including Robin Williams and Fred Rogers from Mister Rogers’ Neighbors, a famous TV show.

There’s a fun traditional water festival every Thai New Year that people want to go to! It’s the unusual “Songkran Festival”,
also called the “Water Festival”. It’s the most expensive in Thailand, but it’s known for the fantastic things people can do in it.
Songkran is in April, and it’s open to everyone. For 3-5 days, people from rural areas who are working in the capital go back
home with their children for the festival; they spend time with their parents who they haven’t seen for a long time. People
throw water on their heads to have an excellent year, with money and without problems.
However, the festival has changed. Now people make teams to throw water at each other in a match and choose a winner. It’s
a wonderful reason to travel and enjoy games. People sell, buy and use water toys, as well as carry cups of different sizes
from their kitchens to throw water. Students don’t wear their usual school clothes or get up early. During Songkran, it’s very
important to wear comfortable clothes and use something to protect your eyes from the sun and water.
Tourists from other countries say this is the most special festival they’ve ever been to because of its new idea of having fun.
People of different ages participate; they act like kids, they shout and have a wonderful time.

The Empire State Building
The Empire State Building is the top place to see for first-time visitors to New York City. This tall building was part of a competition
between New York City businessmen Walter Chrysler and John Raskob for the title of the world’s tallest building. Engineer William
Laab was paid to produce the plans for the building, and John Raskob and Pierre du Pond’s company paid for the project.
Two other projects in competition for the title, 40 Wall Street and the Chrysler Building, were under construction when work on the
Empire State Building began on March 17, 1930. This project was completed on April 11, 1931. However, due to the great
economic crisis of that time, lots of the offices in the building were not rented for several years.
When visiting the Empire State Building, prepare for long ticket lines on the first floor, especially on weekends. You should wear
warm clothes if it’s cold and windy, so check the temperature before you go. Tourists buy one ticket to visit the 86th floor and
another one to the 102nd floor, which offers interesting 360-degree views of the city. Book your tickets online to save money. To go
up to the higher floor, tickets are only available on the 80th floor, where you can learn about the history of the building.

It’s been over a year now since I have phoned my family, connected to a social network, sent text
messages, checked e-mails or taken photographs. During that time, I’ve been living and working on a farm
without electricity. Last year taught me a lot about the natural world, society, and what it means to be human
at a time when the differences between mankind and machines are being eliminated.
This country way of life is often described as “the simple life”. But looking at it carefully, it’s far from being
simple. In fact, this life is actually quite complicated, made up for a thousand small, basic things. By
comparison, my old urban life really was quite “simple” too, but made up of a thousand small, repetitive and
boring things. With all of the electronic objects, websites and applications, there was almost nothing left for
me to do by myself, except the one thing that earned me the cash to pay for my other needs – my job.
54. 54
Though “living without technology” sounds like a sacrifice, it can be a better option for you. When
you’re connected to websites, you’re disconnected from life. You need to decide between the
machine world and the living, active world. There are important things that most of us can do. I
propose not spending more money than you should, not accepting all technological inventions, and
living with simple things.
I love the simple-complex life. While it is not a realistic solution for the majority of people now, we
should stop using more electronic stuff, and more dehumanizing, or tiring technologies. This may
possibly be a solution for those who will experience life in the coming years.
55. 55
120. What is the writer doing in the text?
A. exploring strategies to make people’s lives longer
B. influencing people to sell their electronic objects
C. emphasizing that people should stop doing things by themselves
D. inspiring people to enjoy simple things and reconnect with nature
121. What can the reader find in this article?
A. suggestions about promoting natural and technological activities
B. ideas for purchasing technological items to enjoy nature
C. regrets about the writer’s active life without technology
D. opinions for doing simple daily activities without using technology
56. 56
122. In paragraph 3, the writer suggests that when people are using technology, they
A. sacrifice new inventions.
B. are not living their lives fully.
C. are actively involved in life.
D. have not had financial problems.
123. According to paragraph four, the author loves “ the simple-complex life” because it
A. can be an effective solution for the future.
B. will affect most people’s lives now.
C. is a realistic option for most of us.
D. identifies ways of making technology exciting.
124. The advice the writer would probably give someone is to
A. exploring simple, urban life without technology.
B. live in the countryside with many comforts.
C. leave technology behind a live a simple life.
D. do complicated things and make more money.
