2. Three Reflections
1. Where are we with “This is the year of IPv6?”,
globally
2. The Singapore Chapter
3. Singapore, and the region, and what we should do
3. Is this the year of IPv6?
● No. v6 traffic will stay miniscule as a propotion of
total bandwidth
● No. There will still be no v6-only public networks
● No. NAT behind NAT (behind NAT) will dominate
end-user access, and no one will care
● ... and yet ...
4. Is this the year of IPv6?
● Think marginally. What is done is done, we have
to live in the future
● And the future is a v6-friendly place
● Since we are all going to be migrants there, we
need to integrate
● It makes sense to be ahead of the curve.
9. The Singapore Chapter
● We are less than two years old
● Organised, and supported advocacy events and
conferences
● Spread the word at APRICOT, Polytechnics, etc
● Thank you to those who helped us:
– ISOC
– IDA
– Progreso
10. Where is Singapore in all this?
● Nowhere (who even has IPv6 at home?)
● IPv4 addresses are not unavailable
● Lower growth rates due to us being a mature ICT
economy
● There is no real reason to spend money today, your
business will not collapse if you do not shift.
11. Looking at ASEAN
● Most ASEAN economies ICT access numbers
rising, by double-digit growth
● Being late to the table, they have greater pressures
than Singapore on available v4 space
● So the v6 market in (eg) Indonesia, Vietnam,
Philipines, is exploding
12. Opportunities for Singapore
● We are well placed to be a part of the transitions
that will occur
● Train ourselves, do pilots, stay ahead of the curve
● There are resources available (thank you, WDA,
Progreso, IDA), and we have the advantage of a
diverse ecosystem to test methodologies.
13. With or without us
● The transition, to an Internet with v6, will happen
● For those of us over 45, we have the luxury of
fading away, but ...
● The costs of running a trial, of building
competency, of knowledge, are trivial
● Talk to me: Set up a robust, secure, working v6
dual stack for under S$100 in 3 hours
14. With or without us
● Govt Mandates and Industry Regulators will
continue pushing IPv6
● IDA: To ISPs: The “No Islanding Principle”
● Financial Sector
● Growth is at the edges, and...
● ... we have the edge!
