The Moon-faced Man
1. The Moon-faced Man
Today again
you drew a moon-faced man.
A trunk for a body, and digits growing
like tree limbs.
Each half of the paper ready but empty,
as though he might be
juggling what could emerge,
or hide.
Lately I’ve seen him sporting spikes.
Deep craters for eyes
and as I write this, you give him
a word or two to throw.
He likes it. A storm brews.
I am the mother of memory,
the writer of record. I am the singer
of your early times. I am
Calliope sensing a long journey,
watching her son prepare
for rough seas.
Each drawing unfolds your way of going,
foretells the time
when everything you now are
will fit into a tiny past.
Crumpled moon. Shedding today like skin.
My lonely grief.
