2. INTRODUCTION
The Electric Arc Furnace can be described as a
furnace heating charged materials by the way of
an electric arc. The first furnace came into being
in 1907, at the hands of Paul Heroult of French
origin. The commercial part of these furnaces
was established in the USA.
3. Electric arc furnace steel making process
• A load of steel scrap is carefully deposited on the refractory lined hearth of an open electric
furnace from the top by the use of cranes
• The retractable roof which is refractory lined or water cooled on a large scale is swung to close
the top of the furnace by the help of computer controlled motors
• A low voltage electric current is supplied to the furnace through the graphite electrodes which
are fixed in the center of the roof and entering into the furnace
• As a result an electric arc is formed between the electrodes ad the charge which consequently
melts
4. Electric arc steel making process
• Here after one or two more loads of steel scraps is added into the furnace, lime, flourspurs, and
oxygen are added to the charge.the electrodes are slightly raised and the electric voltage
increased to melt the charge quickly.
• The oxides of impurities such as manganese and silicon combined to form a slag that floats at the
top of the melted steel
• The furnace is tilted and the slag is tapped off.steel is sampled and analysed or temperature and
composition,if satisfactory it’s tapped off into a ladle and sent for secondary steel making
