2. World Blood Donor Day takes place on the 14th June each year. The aim is to raise global awareness of the need for
safe blood and blood products for transfusion and of the critical contribution voluntary, unpaid blood donors make to
national health systems.
Although this year’s focus in on young donors with the slogan “New blood for the world”, almost anyone can donate
blood; all types of blood are needed (A, AB, B and O) and three different types of donations (whole blood, plasma and
platelets) can be made. If you, or one of your loved ones, have ever needed blood, you already know how important it
is. Many people today would not be alive if it wasn't for Australia's generous and voluntary, unpaid blood donors who
give blood to help those in need. It's one of those things that we just expect to be there for us, but only a very small
proportion of people (one in 30) actually give blood. Yet sooner or later, one in three of us will need it.
Our blood is made up of several components - red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and plasma. Each
component has a special function. All blood components have a short shelf life, creating the need for a constant blood
supply.
RED CELLS give blood its colour and accounts for up to 40% of its volume. The main function of these cells is to carry
oxygen from the lungs to all the cells of the body and remove waste products such as carbon dioxide. Transfusions of
red blood cells are used to treat people with:
severe anaemia (such as Thalassaemia Major);
those whose red blood cells do not function adequately; and
people experiencing severe bleeding such as accident victims and patients undergoing surgery.
PLASMA: Red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets are suspended in fluid called plasma. Plasma contains very
important nutrients and clotting factors which help to prevent or stop bleeding. An average adult has approximately
five litres of blood, three litres of which is plasma and 13 different products can be made from plasma donations
PLATELETS are smaller than red and white cells, and are actually fragments of cells made in the bone marrow. The
primary use of platelets is in the treatment of people with various cancers. Diseases such as leukaemia and medical
treatments like chemotherapy can decrease a person's platelet count. If the number of platelets becomes too low,
spontaneous bleeding can occur. Even a small amount of bleeding can be dangerous, particularly if it occurs in the
brain.
