6. Question 1
30 years ago, in 1991, the NBC series L.A. Law started a somewhat lamentable
television craze which was a monumental and unprecedented moment in pop culture.
Such defections, however, occurred regularly on ″L.A. Law,″ a series known for
consistently breaking the boundaries of traditional television and shattering T.V.
taboos in each of it’s previous seasons.
The “event” was faced with harsh criticism, as it was considered “illegal” in many
US states and the American Family Association called for advertiser boycotts and 5
ad sponsors pulled out of NBC too. Even though described as “eminently visual;
cheap, provided the actors are willing; controversial, year in and year out; and
elegantly reversible” by New York Times in 2005, this was a groundbreaking
moment for television and pop culture.

9. Question 2
“X” was originally meant to convey ‘speed with silence, the absence of vibration, the mysterious
harnessing of great energy, and a beautiful living organism of superb grace’.
Accordingly, the ‘Winged Victory of Samothrace’ statue in the Louvre was chosen as the
inspiration. However the designer felt a more feminine, softer representation was needed and he
used Eleanor Velasco Thornton as his inspiration, with that voluptuous cloth billowing out behind
as her ‘wings’.
Although born in Victorian times, Eleanor Thornton would have personified modernity –
whatever age she graced. From a modest background, her intellect and charisma saw her rise
through an elitist society. She became the central presence of an unsung, yet immeasurably
influential coterie of mavericks.
What unmistakable symbol of luxury was inspired from Eleanor, which was known by different
names like “The Whisperer” and Emily and now comes in stainless steel, 24-carat gold,
illuminated frosted crystal, or even matte black and studded with diamonds!

13. Question 3
In 2001 and 2002, the women in Bogota, Columbia did
something special and unique to celebrate International
Women’s Day. What did they do ?
19. Question 5
Members of Congress introduced a constitutional amendment enshrining
women's right to vote in 1878, but it would take decades of protest for it to
become the law of the land. In 1918, President Woodrow Wilson started
supporting women's suffrage, but members of the National Women's Party
thought he wasn't using his influence to sway the last two senators needed for
an amendment to pass. In January 1919, activists started
to___________________ outside public buildings, implying he was a
hypocrite for not doing more. The amendment passed a few months later.
What did the National Woman’s Party do to make the President listen and
give in to their demands ?
22. Question 6
The sacrifice of soldiers killed during World Wars One and Two is well-documented.
But the efforts of munitions workers stained yellow by toxic chemicals is a story
much less told. A campaign now hopes to honour the so-called ______ ______, who
risked life and limb to fill up the vacancies in the factories to supply ammunition to
the frontline.
TNT was toxic and the effect of packing shells with TNT on a daily basis was dire.
Fumes penetrated deep into the skin of the girls working in the factories and their
hair turned blonde. Some of them even gave birth to almost yellow babies. This
yellow appearance led them to earn the nick-name __________ ________.
FITB. (Slight variations accepted)
25. Question 7
This strike demanding for gender pay parity has its genesis in the first Kvennafrí or
‘Women’s Day Off,’ that was observed in 1975. On October 24, 1975, 90 percent of
Icelandic women went on strike and refused to work and look after their households for a
day with the whole nation coming to a standstill.
In Iceland women earn on average between 14 and 18 percent less than their male
counterparts. More than a decade ago, in 2005, women left work at 2.08pm. In 2008,
they walked out at the slightly later time of 2.25pm – indicating that their demands were
being met. In 2016, on a Monday, many women in Iceland walked out of their offices at
2.38pm to join the protests on the streets regarding equal pay for equal work.
Look at the times carefully and tell me why the women chose to leave their offices at
those oddly specific times. I’ll be happily waiting for an explanation.
26.
27. Answer
To attract attention to the Gender Pay Gap. After those specific times, women basically worked
free compared to men, judging by the 8 hour work rule and hourly pay. Hence, women left
office at progressively later times showing that the gender pay gap was gulfing.
28. Question 8
Identify the person on the cover
of the September 1993 cover on
the London born magazine “The
Face”. A hugely under
appreciated feminist and
advocater of rights for women
and people belonging to the
LGBTQ+ community, this
person led a very misunderstood
and controversial life before
passing away in 1994.
31. Question 9
As late as 1970s, the top five orchestras in the U.S. had fewer than 5% women. It
wasn't until 1980 that any of these top orchestras had 10% female musicians. But by
1997 they were up to 25% and today some of them are well into the 30s.
To eliminate gender bias and diversify the largely male orchestra, what ingenious
audition idea/strategy did the orchestras come up with, which thus increased the
chances of women making it through the auditions to almost 50% ?
In the years after these changes were instituted, the percent of female musicians in the
five highest-ranked orchestras in the nation increased from 6 percent in 1970 to 21
percent in 1993. Given the low turnover found in most symphony orchestras, the
increase in female musicians is significant. What was this new method/ what was the
change incorporated to eliminate gender bias in orchestras ?
34. Question 10
Sarla Chaudhary, now 49, was one of the hundreds who gave the test for a
job. Chaudhary was selected and she joined on daily wages basis.
In 1991, Chaudhary was a part of a group asked to record something in All
India Radio. “I had to record in Marathi in different ways for different
situations and it took over three to four days to finalise it. Later, the voice was
mixed with a computer and was centralised.”
Her job demanded her to be fluent in multiple Indian languages and to be
repetitive and clear. She spent her working days guiding and directing people
during crucial times and situations. Just tell me where did Sarla work and
what was her job. Alternatively, tell me how do we recognise her voice even
today ?
37. Question 11

justified criticism, and was finally laid to rest by twitter by stating it to be a case of
very bad PR and marketing ?

Wives are at war with husbands, teenagers at war with their mothers, and women at
war with other women in the six-part Netflix drama, starring Pooja Bhatt, Shahana
Goswami, Amruta Subhash, and Plabita Borthakur as four women trapped in the

during her US tours.
In April 2013, she was honoured in London by the selected members of House of Commons
of the United Kingdom.

48. Question 6
The closest prototype to contemporary versions of “X” came in 1921 when Kotex
entered the US markets. Interestingly the idea for this came as an aftermath of the
First World War. Nurses tending to the wounded soldiers of the battle eventually
discovered that bandages made of wood pulp or a cotton acrylic blend, did a better
work at stopping the bleeding from the soldiers and prevented messes. Also the
bandages were cheap and could be thrown away.
Cashing on the ingenious ideas of these nurses, companies came up with the
commercial version of it, at exorbitant prices. Companies like Southall and Kotex
were among the first to introduce these into the market and come up with
advertisements and “genius” strategies to sell them.
ID “X”.
50. Question 8
Although history remembers her for something very different, among X’s

70. Question 1
It all started from a 60 second long controversial ad that was aired in 2014 during the Super
Bowl. In the 60 second sketch, men and women of different ages was asked to enact a few
activities. The only catch was they would have to enact those things as they would expect a girl
to do them in real life. None of it was scripted. It was more of a social experiment than of an
ad.
The activities that were given to the participants to perform were running, throwing and
fighting. Instead of simply doing these actions, each person weakly reenacted them, by
accidentally dropping the ball or slapping instead of punching. But when the same questions
were asked of young girls, they threw, ran and fought aggressively — like anyone would.
It was thus seen that when asked to do something exactly how a woman would, most people
irrespective of gender, took that in a demeaning sense and made a mockery out of it. The
response of the younger girls proved that misogyny is imbibed over a period of time and can
infact be unlearnt. Give me the very powerful hashtag “#” that was born in 2014 as a result of
this commercial by “Always” sanitary pads, an undertaking of P&G. (Images Follow)

81. Question 4
This story of origin of this market is quite interesting. In 1533 AD, a labour system
called Lallup-Kaba was forcefully imposed in Manipur. According to this forced
labour system, the male members of the Meitie community, who inhabited the area
were sent to work in faraway lands or fight wars, leaving the women behind in the
villages. To support their household, the women in the villages took the
responsibility in their own hands – cultivated their paddy fields, weaved textiles and
created several items that were sold in improvised markets.
Thus Ima Keithel was born. Also known as the Ema Bazar or Nupi Keithel which
literally translates into “Mother’s Market” this is one of the oldest and most unique
markets in whole of Asia, which kept it’s rich tradition intact.
What is so unique about this market ?

88. Question 6
The iconic “X” fictional character was named an Honorary Ambassador for the
Empowerment of Women and Girls on 21 October 2016, in support of Sustainable
Development Goal 5 – to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.
The designation ceremony coincided with the 75th anniversary of her first appearance in
a comic book in 1941. “X” has since then been depicted in movies and TV series. She is a
global citizen and universally recognized for her commitment to justice, peace and equality
and is seen as a model of strength, fairness and compassion becoming a symbol of
empowerment for women and girls in much of the world.
A lot of UN workers had a problem with this decision because of “X”s costume. But UN
spokesperson Jeffrey Brez said that “The objective was to reach out to her fans to raise
awareness of UN sustainable development.”

91. Question 7
“X”, is a radical feminist activist group intended to protect women's rights. The organization became
internationally known for organizing controversial topless protests against sex tourism, religious
institutions, sexism, homophobia and other social, national, and international topics. Founded in
Ukraine, the group is now based in France.

A series of ads, developed as a creative idea for UN Women by Memac Ogilvy & Mather
Dubai, uses genuine Google searches to reveal the widespread prevalence of sexism and
discrimination against women. Based on searches dated 9 March, 2013 the ads expose
negative sentiments ranging from stereotyping as well as outright denial of women’s
rights.
“When we came across these searches, we were shocked by how negative they were and
decided we had to do something with them,” says Christopher Hunt, Art Director of the
creative team. The idea developed places the text of the Google searches over the
mouths of women portraits, as if to silence their voices.
