1. SCIAM Recommended Volumetric Flow Meters
Used In SCIAM Mass Flow Systems
SCIAM Worldwide offers flow meters to be used in conjuntion with the DM3 Density
Meter© to calculate mass flow. Every flow meter recommended by SCIAM offers
characteristics particularly suitable for the measurement of volumetric flow of highly
abbraisive mining, dredging and similar slurries.
Each are selected because they are purely volumetric - unaffected by change
of media density or viscosity. The multiplication of the output from a DM3 Density
Meter© and the flow meter provides mass flow. All SCIAM recommended flow
meters are obstructionless, in sizes from 50 to 1000mm internal diameter
(2”- 40”).
Flow meters are normally installed downstream of a DM3 Density Meter©,as such,
the DM3 Density Meter© provides the requisite straight length of pipe necessary for
accurate mass flow measurement.
In order to qualify for certification by SCIAM’s stringent quality assurance, selected
flow meters must have particularly high coil magnetizing current and exciter
frequencies. This guarantees excellent signal to media noise ratio, which guarantees
an accuracy of < ± 0.5% even when measuring the most aggressive and ‘noisiest’
of slurries. The liners are normally thick walled polyurethane or soft natural rubber,
selected for its high resistance to abrasive slurries.
This is an ultrasonic flow meter, but unlike time of flight or
Doppler shift techniques, the SONARtrac does not rely on the
propagation of high frequency acoustics through the process.
Instead, it measures the velocity of turbulent eddies as they
pass by an array of longitudinally disposed sensors. As such, the
SONARtrac is insensitive by scattering effects operating in dirty or
multiphase media, as well as being purely volumetric and unaf-
fected by change of media density or viscosity.
Another unique feature of SONARtrac is the ability to measure
sonar based gas volume fraction, using the velocity at which
sound propagates through the slurry. Knowing the % entrained
gas, the SONARtrac when used with a SCIAM density meter it is
CiDRA SonarTrac possible to measure mass flow media having entrained gas.
The Endress & Hauser 55S flow meter has the ability to compute
and display wet mass flow rate, wet mass totals, and wet sg.
Alternatively, it has the option to compute and display % dry
solids, dry mass flow rate and dry mass totals.
