How Can a Unified Digital Core Promote New Business Models, Growth,
and Innovation in High Tech?
When you are streaming a movie, talking with friends on your PC, or playing live with gamers around
the world, you may not be thinking about the optical networks and data centers that make it all possible.
But these high-speed, bandwidth-intensive applications are what make Oclaro – a name you may not
recognize – a company you know. As our need for speed and bandwidth continues to skyrocket, Oclaro
knew it had to prepare for massive growth and new business models. But siloed data across systems
and lines of business meant more time was being spent on data gathering than on critical strategy plans.
To unify the enterprise on a single digital platform, Oclaro worked with Hitachi Consulting to replace an
Oracle system and deploy a wall-to-wall SAP® software landscape with SAP S/4HANA® at its core. The
project was completed in 11 months – with systems up and running on day one of going live. Now Oclaro
has centralized, integrated data from finance to forecasting, procurement, manufacturing, and HR – with
a lower total cost of ownership to boot. The result is “one Oclaro” that can continue to grow and innovate
to meet the world’s expanding telecommunication and computing needs.

By switching from an Oracle system to a complete SAP solution landscape based on SAP S/4HANA,
Oclaro was able to speed processes, improve decision-making, and lower total cost of ownership (TCO).
Before: Challenges and Opportunities
• Unify and simplify core ERP systems following a series of mergers and acquisitions to drive continued growth
• Centralize data and eliminate silos across and within lines of business to create one source of truth that
enables holistic, data-driven decision-making across the enterprise
• Gain a clear picture of HR across 10 countries to ensure the right people are working toward common goals
Why SAP and Hitachi Consulting

• Total business transformation enabled using SAP S/4HANA
• Integration of cloud-based line-of-business solutions for HR and procurement
• Hitachi Consulting’s experience with the SAP HANA® platform, high-tech manufacturing, and Oclaro’s business
After: Value-Driven Results
• “Big bang” implementation in 11 months, with systems and processes up and running on day one
• Single source of data for generating all forecasting input, resulting in greater control, accuracy, and a common
measurement across the company – all in less time and with lower TCO
• Greater visibility into market demands and the agility to quickly respond to changes – a huge competitive edge
• Consolidated supply plan that can be communicated to external and in-house manufacturers
• Automated forecast and purchase order collaboration with SAP Ariba solutions, vastly accelerating and
simplifying supplier interactions and enabling next-day feedback (compared to weeks prior)
• Centralized, global HR data using SAP SuccessFactors solutions, which is then integrated with data from
manufacturing, finance, and so on – helping ensure the right mix and placement of employees
“We should be gathering information 10% of the time and making decisions
90% of the time. With our SAP system on SAP S/4HANA, we have more
