Extracurricularschool sponsoredclubsandactivities,andinterscholasticathleticsandactivitiesare an
extensionof the selectedcontentcurriculumandinstructional strategiesof the OmahaPublicSchool
District,whetherornottheyoccur ina traditional classroomsetting.
Extracurricularactivitiesenhance the overalleffectivenessof the educationprogramandstudent
participationinsuchactivitiesisencouraged.The Superintendentandadministrative staff have the
responsibilitytoguide andcontrol suchactivitiesandtodevelopprocedures,whichwillgovernstudent
participationinthese activities.
Thishandbookisto be a summaryof the importantdetailsthatare neededtobe successful inthe
classroomsetting,the extracurriculararena,andthe communitythatthese students represent. Copies
of thisbookare onfile withthe administrationandadditional copiescanbe requestedthroughtheir
officesoryourchild’scoach.
Coaching Philosophy:
I believethatgiventhe properguidance and practice,anindividual isable toachieve aheightenedlevel
of mental,physical andemotional ability. Asacoach, it ismy goal to continuouslyevaluate playersin
each of these three areasandtry to helpthe athlete reachtheirhighestpotential. It isimportantto
considerthe complete athlete andtheirhistorytohelpdetermine theirrole inteamactivities.
The buildingprincipal and/orathletic/activitydirectorof eachschool shall be responsiblefor
determiningthe eligibilityof anystudent whowishestoparticipate inanyextracurricularorco-
curricularactivity.Whenthe numberof studentsallowedtoparticipate inateamor club mustbe
limited,eachsupervisor/coachshall be responsiblefordeterminingwhichcandidateswill become
membersof thatteam or club. Studentsmusthave a white cardwhichdeterminesif theyare eligible to
participate. Studentswhoare noteligible,willnotbe consideredasparticipantsinthe sportsprogram.
Expectationsand Purpose of the Book:
The purpose of thisbook isto answerimportantquestionsthatparents,participants,coaches,and
communitymembersmayhave. Itprovidesadetailedexplanationof expectationsinthe areasof the
student’smental,physical,andemotionalgrowthasthey pertaintothe program. It isalso an effortto
define roleswithinthe programtominimizeconfusionwithprogramparticipation. Withthese items
outlined,thismanual canbe usedasan educational tool tohelpprovide deeperunderstandingtothe
program’sexpectationsaswell asconsequencesfornotupholdingtheseexpectations. The information
providedinthisbookare to be consideredafirmguide towhat isexpected,butthe athleticdepartment
of BryanHigh School,the coachingstaff,andadministrationwithholdthe righttoimplementorchange
the describedactionsbasedonwhatisbestfor the program.
Seasonal Information:
Bryan SeniorHigh’ssoftball programisnotonlyaFall sport,it is a yearlongcommitment. Athletesthat
are lookingtoplayonthe BryanSeniorHighVarsitySoftball teamare expectedtoparticipate in pre- and
post-seasonactivitiesthatinclude,butare notlimitedto the followingitems. Inthe itemslisted,the
coachingstaff will make attemptstoassistintransportationtooff-site events,butitwill be the players’
and the players’families’responsibilitiestomake sure theyare inattendance.
 Maintainingphysical andmental healthnecessarytoexecutingthe skillstobe successful in
competition. Thiswouldmean conditioning,playingasa part of a teamwhennotinschool
contests,attendingcamps,andstudyinggame situations. Athletesthatdonot engage inthese
activitiesare notguaranteedaposition,butimprovestheirchancesdue toheightened
awarenessand abilitylevel.
 Volunteeringopportunitiesthatare bothon and off of school campus. Examplescouldbe to
helpruncamps, concessionstands,orotherprogramsthat helppromote Bryanstudentathletes
and the softball programasa whole. Opportunitieswill be lookedatasa programwide
experience,playersshouldnotassume theyare notresponsible due totheirposition,team
they’re playingon,orexperience level.
 Engage in fundraisingopportunities. Fundraisersprovide additional incomeforthe team to
participate inextraplayerdevelopment,update equipment,andprovide the teamwith
promotional materials. Individualswhodonotmeetfundraisinggoalswhenorderingclothing
will be expectedtopaythe difference tocoverthe costof the materials. Atnotime shoulditbe
expectedthatthe softball programwillcoverthe costof additional materialsorexperiences.
Preseason–
Preseasonworkoutswill be communicatedthroughpersonal contactinformation. Informalworkouts
for those studentsthat are not involvedinasummerteamwill beginapproximatelyamonthbefore the
beginningof the season. These will notbe formal practices,butwaystoassessskillsearlyon,exercise
and teambuilding. Itishighlyencouragedthatathletesengageinthisconditioningtobecome familiar
withexpectations,prepare forthe seasonphysically,developmentalawarenessof the game,andmeet
membersof the teaminan informal setting. Preseasonactivitieswill varybasedonexperienceand
conditioninglevels.
Season –
Studentsare expectedtoupholdthe standardsdescribedinthishandbookandtheirOPScode of
conduct. Studentsthatcheckoutmaterialsare responsible fortheirmaintenance andcare. All
materials,unlessspecifiedbeforehand,will be returnedatthe endof the seasonas part of a team
checkout. Anymaterialsthatare notreturnedastheywere checkedout,deemedunusable,orreturned
at all,will be issuedafine forthe replacementof the materials. Scheduleswill be postedonthe Metro
Conference website: http://www.mhsaaconference.org (SearchBryanHighSchool).
Postseason–
Studentsare responsible forreturningtheirmaterials. Inadditiontothis,coacheswill determine who
letteredasa varsityplayer,establishawinterworkoutregimen,andansweranyquestionsparentsmay
have aboutthe culminatingseasonorthe upcomingseason.

School

Behavior -
Studentswhoparticipate withBryanHigh’ssoftballteamare expectedtoupholdalevelof
professionalismandrespectabove anordinarystudent. Girlsare expectedtoupholdthe code of
conduct inall settingsrelatingtoschool,bothduringandoutside school hours. Individualsthatreceive
administrativediscipline,teacherreferrals,excessive tardies,orhave anegative teacherreportcan
receive aconsequence throughsoftball. Consequencescanbe,notare notlimitedto,apologiestothe
team,sittingoutof game(s),physical tasks,orremoval fromthe team. Each playerwill be lookedatin
an individualbasis. Punishmentwill be discussedonlywiththe parentandthe playerinvolved,notthe
entire teamorwithotherparentsunlessthe safetyof otherplayershasbeenjeopardized.
Playerswhoare not representingthe BryanHighsoftball programthroughpositiveactionsorupholding
the Bryan HighSchool code of conduct,may be askedto returntheirequipmentandremovedfromthe
teamby the coaches’discretion.
Grades-
Bryan SeniorSoftball teamwill adheretothe guidelinesexpressedinthe studentcode of conductand
NSAA eligibilityrequirements. Studentathletes,regardlessof positionandteamstanding,are required
to maintainpassinggradesinordertoparticipate. Studentswhoare havingdifficultieswillbe required
to attendacademiccoachingat least,or more if deemednecessary,aweek. Studentswhoare failinga
classwill notbe permittedtoplayor will be atthe discretionof the coachingstaff if theyare making
accommodationstomeettheiracademicgoal.
Bryan SeniorSoftball hasbeenproudto proclaimanexcellence ineducationandgrades. The softball
program hasboastedon of the highestGPA’sconsistentlythroughout all of BryanHigh’sathletic
programs. Girls are expectedtoupholdthisstandardandcommunicate anyacademicdifficultiesbefore
theybecome problematic. Coacheswillworkwithindividualstofindabalance betweenacademicsand
athletics.
Community

General Conduct-
Studentswhoparticipate withBryanHigh’ssoftballteamare expectedtoupholda levelof
professionalismandrespectabove anordinarycommunitymember. Girlsare expectedtoupholdthe
code of conductin all settingsrelatingtoschool,bothduringandoutside school hours. Individualsthat
are involvedinorwithdrugs,alcohol,andpolice actioncanreceive aconsequencethroughsoftball.
Consequencescanbe,notare not limitedto,apologiestothe team, sittingoutof game(s),physical
tasks,or removal fromthe team. Each playerwill be lookedatinan individualbasis.Playersthatare
suspectedof beingunderthe influence ata softball functionwillbe referredtoadministrative staff and
handledthroughthe general code of conductproceduresorthe proceduresidentifiedbythe athletic
director. Studentathletesthattest positive will be removedfromthe teamdue tosafetyandwellbeing
concerns. Punishmentwill be discussedonlywiththe parentandthe playerinvolved,notthe entire
teamor withotherparentsunlessthe safetyof otherplayershasbeenjeopardized.
Volunteering–
Athleteswill be requestedtoparticipate inactivitiesthatwill notresultindirectcompensation. Athletes
may be requiredtoparticipate inactivitiesoutside of school hourstohelpraise money,betterthe
community,mentoryouth,assistanotherBryanathleticteam, ordevote personal time inordertobuild
the Bryan softball program.
Issuesrelatingtovolunteeringeffortsmustbe communicatedwiththe coachingstaff. Failure tomeet
volunteeringopportunitiescanresultina player’sinabilitytoreceive certainperks,participate in
functions,ormaybe requiredtopayfor expenses. Individualsandconcernswillbe discussedonan
individualizedbasisandplanswill be developedbasedonthe circumstances.
Social Media-
Social networkingisagreatway to expressyourself,keepincontactwithfriends,andbuildyour
network.Asan OmahaBryan softball player,youare responsible forthe informationyouvoluntarypost
on the online networks,suchasFacebook,MySpace andTwitter or any othersocial networkingsite.
 No offensive orinappropriate picturesorinappropriate commentsare posted.
 Do not violate the OmahaPublicSchoolscode of conduct.
What youare postingmaynot onlyaffectyou,itmay affectothersas well.Youare free toexpress
yourself onsocial networks.However,itisimportantthatyourespectthe privacyand rightsof others.
Althoughyoumaynot be aware the informationyoupostispublicinformation,be aware thatwhatyou
postmay affectyourfuture.
Playerswhoare not representingthe BryanHighsoftball programthroughpositiveactionsorupholding
the Bryan HighSchool code of conduct,may be askedto returntheirequipmentandremovedfromthe
teamby the coaches’discretion.
Practice

Attendance –
Attendance ismandatoryforall practices,scrimmages,gamesandfunctions.The coachingstaff
understandscertainissuesmayarise,butanyabsencesmustbe approvedpriortothe incidentbya
coach. Since participatesare studentathletes,attendance intheirregisteredclassesisalsorequired.
Studentsmustbe presenttoat leasthalf of theirscheduleddaytobe eligible topractice orparticipate
insports relatedfunctions.
To ensure thatattendance isa priority,studentsshouldmodifytheirpersonalandworkschedulesto
minimize conflict. Itisthe responsibilityof the studentathlete toadjusttheirschedulesbeforepractices
and gamesbegin. Missingpractice due toworkis deemedanunexcusedabsence.
Unexcusedabsencesmayresultinlimitedplaytime orremoval fromthe team. Excusedabsencesmust
be documentedwithadoctor’snote or teacher’snote bythe nextpractice. Incidentsthateffectplay
and statuswithinateam will onlybe discussedwiththe playerinvolvedandtheirfamilies. Since
absencesmaybe a resultof personal reasons,incidentswill notbe discussedoutsideof the involved
partiesandmay differfromplayer-to-playerbasedoninformationcommunicatedtothe coach.
Clothing-
At the beginningof eachseasonyouwill be issuedauniformbyyourcoach. You are totallyresponsible
for thisuniform.If youruniformislost,stolen,ordamagedinanywayyou are responsibleforreplacing
the uniformat twice the value of the original uniform.
The uniformissuedtothe athlete shall notbe worntopractices,and itis the dutyof the athlete to
acquire the properattire. Athletesmusthave softball pants,socks,glove,cleats,andsliders. Individuals
whodo not have the meansto have the properequipmentshouldcommunicate withthe coachingstaff
to try to be properlyequipped. Individualswhoare not equipped,includingwearinggame uniformsto
practice,withappropriate practice gearcan have consequencesadministeredormaynotbe allowedto
practice.
To promote playersinpracticinglike theyplay,jewelryof anytype isnotpermitted. Earrings,rings,
watches,bracelets,andnecklaces(bothclothandmetal) shouldbe removedpriortogameplay.
Coacheswill remindplayers,butitisthe responsibilityof the teamcaptainandplayerstoensure that
theyare notin violation.
Cell Phones–
Cell phonesare notpermittedduringpractice. Thisincludesduringwaterbreaks,transitionsandwait
time.Exceptionswill be made forindividualsthatcommunicate extenuatingcircumstanceswiththe
coachingstaff. Issuesrelatingtocell phone usage willbe addressedonatime-by-time basis.
Equipment–
As a memberof the team,playersare expectedtocare forequipment. Equipmentshouldbe usedas
designedormodifiedbythe coachingstaff. Thisisto ensure the safetyof playersandstaff aswell as
maintainingthe qualityof the equipment. Coachesholdthe ultimate decisiononwhetherequipment
will be used,bothpersonallyandschool provided.
 Before Practice:
o Playerswill checkthe practice scheduleandgatherequipmentfromthe storage location
basedon the day’sdrills.
o Playersalignthe equipmentinamannerthatcan easilybe gottentoandnot simply
placedinone bigpile.
 DuringPractice:
o Playerswill use equipmentinthe specifiedmannerduringdrills.
 PostPractice:
o All playersassistinputtingmaterialsaway. Noplayeristoleave the fieldorpacktheir
owngear until the team’sgeariscleanedup.
Attitude –
Attitude isasubjective indicatorof aplayer’sinvolvementwiththe sport. Coacheswillbe lookingat
playersonwhethertheyare playingasif, “It’snow or never.”Withevery daythat passes,we getcloser
and closerto the endof the softball seasonandthatstatementbecomesrelevant. Butthe truth is,you
neverknowwhenyourlastgame,yourlast inning,yourlastatbat, or your lastplaywill be. Attitude will
be addressedindividuallyandwill be inanefforttomaximize the opportunitiesourplayers’experience.
Make eachopportunitycount.
Playersmaynotagree withtheircoaches,parents,andfellow teammates,butourattitude expectation
isthat theywill disagree inarespectful manner. Thiscomesacrossthroughwords,actions,andbody
language. Wordsshouldalwaysbe encouraging,actionsshouldbe purposeful,andourbodylanguage
shouldbe that of a respectedindividual. Coacheswill administerconcernswith attitudeandeffortwith
the playersinitially,butmayinvolve parentsif needbe. Consequencesmaybe administeredtoaddress
attitude concernsonan individualbasis.
Games

Arrival/Departure –
Athleteswill travel asateamto functionsoff-campus. Transportationwill be providedbythe school and
leave the school at a predeterminedtime. Studentsthatwill be participatingortravelingwiththe team
as a spectator,are expectedtobe at the buson time. It isthe responsibilityof the coachingstaff to
allowforadequate travel time,provide safe transportation,and ensure thatathletesare present. Due
to safetyconcerns,studentsare notallowedtotransportthemselves. Exceptionswill be made ona
time-by-timebasisanddiscussedwiththe coachingstaff. Studentswhoare grantedexceptions are
expectedtoadhere tosafe drivingpractices,parkinginappropriatelocations,andwill nottransport
otherplayers.
Playersmayleave withtheirparentsorotherfamilymemberafterthe game aslongas they
communicate theirdeparture toacoach. Playerscan provide otherplayersaride withpriorapproval
fromboth players’guardians. Athletesare notpermittedtoleave withasignificantotherorundisclosed
individual. It isthe player’sresponsibilitytoarrange a ride fromthe game or school. It isnot the
responsibilityof the coachto provide rideshome.
Uniforms–
At the beginningof eachseasonyouwill be issuedauniformbyyourcoach. You are totallyresponsible
for thisuniform.If youruniformislost,stolen,ordamagedinanywayyou are responsible forreplacing
the uniformat twice the value of the original uniform.
Coacheswill announce colorcombinationspriortothe game. Athletesthatare participatingincontest
will be expectedtobe dressedappropriately. Itisthe player’sresponsibilitytohave the correct
clothing,colorcombination,and cleanlinesstotake the field. Individualsthatare notproperlydressed
may be restrictedtothe dugoutduringgameplay.
Jewelryof anytype isnotpermitted. Earrings,rings,watches,bracelets,andnecklaces(bothclothand
metal) shouldbe removedpriortogameplay. Coacheswill remindplayers,butitisthe responsibilityof
the team captainand playerstoensure that theyare not in violation.
Individualsthatare travelingwiththe teamare expectedtodresssimilarly. Playersthatare injuredmay
weartheirjerseywithjeansandtennisshoes. Personsthatare travelingwiththe teamwillweara
Bryan Softball shirtandjeans,butnottheiruniform. Thisisto preventconfusionandpromote team
unity.
Equipment–
As a memberof the team,playersare expectedtocare forequipment. Equipmentshouldbe usedas
designedormodifiedbythe coachingstaff. Thisisto ensure the safetyof playersandstaff aswell as
maintainingthe qualityof the equipment. Coachesholdthe ultimate decisiononwhetherequipment
will be used,bothpersonallyandschool provided.
Equipmentisplacedindesignatedareasto maintainqualityandsafety.
 Pregame:
o Catchersmust have a properprotective gearwhenwarminguppitchers. Battinghelmets
and fieldingmasksare notacceptable protective gear. Catchersmustalsoweara chest
protector.
o Helmets,bats,andcatcher’sgearis placedneatlyoutside the dugoutforumpire inspection.
o Playersalignthe equipmentinamannerthatcan easilybe observedandnotsimplyplaced
inone big pile.
o Once inspectioniscompleted,itisthe players’responsibilitytomove the equipmentto the
dugoutbefore play.
 DuringPlay:
o Helmetsare placedona rack or ina bag nearthe entrance of the dugout. Individualsare
requiredtohave a helmetonwhile onoffence,ondeck,andin-the-hole (batter,nextup,
and the batterafter).
o Bats are to be hungproperly,notsimplylaidonthe groundor stuckin the fence.
o Knowwhere yourglove isat all times. Itisnot the coaches’responsibilitytokeeptrackof
playerequipmentduringplay.
 Post-Game:
o Playersassistincollectingandorganizingthe equipment. Noplayeristoleave the fielduntil
all of the equipmentisinthe storage or inthe bus.
o It isthe player’sresponsibilitytomake sure theirpersonal equipmentisgatheredatthe end
of the game. Coacheswill notreplace belongingsthatare leftata fieldof play.
Dugout Etiquette –
All individualsare expectedtoadhere tothe guidelinesregardlessof theirrole. Expectationsdescribed
beloware to ensure ahighlevel of engagement, safetyandsportsmanship. Individualswhodonot
adhere tothe dugoutproceduresmaybe askedtoleave the dugoutor refusedfuture entryas
determinedbythe coachingstaff.
 Cell Phones –Cell phonesare notpermittedduringpractice. Thisincludesduringwaterbreaks,
transitionsandwaittime.Exceptionswillbe made forindividualsthatcommunicate extenuating
circumstanceswiththe coachingstaff. Issuesrelatingtocell phone usage will be addressedona
time-by-timebasis.
 Cheering/Engagement –Whennotplaying,athletesare toremainengagedinthe game by
cheeringtheirteamon. Attitude off the fieldisasimportantason the field.
Wellness

 AthletesMUSTFOLLOW ALL INSTRUCTIONSfromthe sports medicine stafftoaidinprevention
and care of injuries
 The ATR is a medical facilityandmustbe treatedassuch The ATR is nota lounge.Youmustget
inand out, andcannot waitaroundfor friendstobe done.
 No horseplayorprofanity

 You mustget all treatment,taping,evaluationsdone before practice/game

Concussions–
Bryan HighSoftball will adheretoguidelinesestablishedandreportedonthe NSAA website,
http://www.nebsportsconcussion.org/sports-concussions/return-to-play-guidelines.html. Decisions
basedon playwill be determinedbythe coachingstaff,alongwiththe recommendationsof the trainer
and doctors. Eventhougha studentmaybe clearedtoplay,it maybe determinedthattheywill have a
limitedrole untildeemedready. Issuesrelatingtoconcussionswill be handledonanindividual basis
withthe player’soverall healthasa priority.
Parents

The organizationwill nottolerate anybehavioronthe playingfieldorinthe standswhich wouldhinder
the spiritof sportsmanshipandcooperationthatwe are tryingto encourage. Byallowingyourdaughter
to participate inathleticsatBryanHigh School,youare agreeingtoupholdthese traditionsby:
1. At Games,only the coaches will be allowedin the dugout and/or on the bench. DO NOT COACH
YOUR CHILD FROM THE STANDS. The coach and playeronthe fieldmayhave specificsigns,or
prearrangedscenariostoaska playertodo something.Do notinterfere withthatCoach’s
instruction.
2. Abusive andfoul language isnotpermitted
3. Conductof anyguestsof parentsisthe responsibilityof the parent/guardianwhose child will
participate onthe team.Please thinktwice before sayingsomethingcritical.
4. Reinforce andremindyourdaughtertohonorthe player’scode of conductshe isbound to uphold.
5. I will make sure mydaughterremainsinthe dugoutand/oron the benchwhenshe isnot in the
game,and to cheerherteammates.
6. I will rememberthatchildrenparticipateinsportstohave funand that the game is for youths,not
adults.
7. I will informthe coachesof anyailment,injuryorphysical disabilitythatmayaffectthe safetyof the
childor the safetyof others.
8. I will notopenlycomplainaboutor,bringup,teamissuesormydispleasure about otherplayersin
frontof mydaughter,otherplayersorteam parents.
9. I will respectthe officials andtheirauthorityduringthe gamesandwill neverquestion, discuss,or
confrontthe coachingstaff afterthe game.I will take the time tospeakwiththe coachesat an
agreedtime orplace.
10. I will teachmychildto playbythe rulesandto understandthe conceptof whatit means to be a
teamplayer.
11. I will demandthatmychildtreatotherplayersandcoaches,officials,andspectatorswith respect
regardlessof race,creed,color,ability,ordifferenceof opinion.
12. I will notyell at,criticize,orridicule mychildoranyparticipantformakinga mistake or losinga
competition.
13. I will reinforce tomychildnotto askthe coachesduringa game,scrimmage,orpractice about

To upholdthe traditionsandexpectationsof BryanHigh’ssportstradition,coacheswill have defined
expectationsof conduct. Thisisanincomplete listbecause the coachingstaff willhave dutiesarise that
are notalwayspredicted,are definedbythe administration,orare explicittothe fieldof play.
1. Coach shouldestablishteamrules,coachingphilosophy,andproperlysetplayerandparental
expectationsonpractice participation,playingtime,in-game interactionbetweenplayerand
parents.
2. Exemplifybehaviorthatisrepresentativeof beinganadult,acoach anda leaderof youngwomen.
3. Demonstrate highideals,goodsportsmanship,anddesirableattitudesinpersonal behaviorand
demandthe same standardsfromhis/herplayers.
4. Emphasize tohis/herplayersandsupportpersonnel the importance of properbehaviorandthe
necessityof restrainingfromenteringthe playingfieldtoengage inanaltercationof anykind.
5. Maintainself-controlatall times.
6. Utilize positive educationalmethodsincoaching;givingall playersanopportunitytodevelopand
use initiative,leadership,andjudgment.
7. Pay close attentiontothe physical conditionandwell-beingof players;refusingtojeopardize the
healthof an individualforthe sake of improvinghis/herteam'schancesof winning.
8. Discourage profanityorabusive language directedtowardanyoneinvolvedwithevents.
9. Refuse todisparage opponent,officials,orothersassociated withouractivities.
10. Conducthimself/herself properlywhenraisingaquestionaboutordiscussingacall withanofficial.
11. Coachesare expectedtointeractwithparents,fosteringanatmosphere of open communications,
trust andteam.
12. Coachesshouldconductorganizedandproductive practices.Practice shouldbe conductedina
serious,“Game pace”manor.Practice isfor learningandimproving. Be preparedforpractice and
setthe tone.
13. Coachesare strictlyprohibitedfromusingalcohol duringall teamactivities,including butnotlimited
to gamesand practices.

Introduction Extracurricularschool sponsoredclubsandactivities,andinterscholasticathleticsandactivitiesare an extensionof the selectedcontentcurriculumandinstructional strategiesof the OmahaPublicSchool District,whetherornottheyoccur ina traditional classroomsetting. Extracurricularactivitiesenhance the overalleffectivenessof the educationprogramandstudent participationinsuchactivitiesisencouraged.The Superintendentandadministrative staff have the responsibilitytoguide andcontrol suchactivitiesandtodevelopprocedures,whichwillgovernstudent participationinthese activities. Thishandbookisto be a summaryof the importantdetailsthatare neededtobe successful inthe classroomsetting,the extracurriculararena,andthe communitythatthese students represent. Copies of thisbookare onfile withthe administrationandadditional copiescanbe requestedthroughtheir officesoryourchild’scoach. Coaching Philosophy: I believethatgiventhe properguidance and practice,anindividual isable toachieve aheightenedlevel of mental,physical andemotional ability. Asacoach, it ismy goal to continuouslyevaluate playersin each of these three areasandtry to helpthe athlete reachtheirhighestpotential. It isimportantto considerthe complete athlete andtheirhistorytohelpdetermine theirrole inteamactivities. The buildingprincipal and/orathletic/activitydirectorof eachschool shall be responsiblefor determiningthe eligibilityof anystudent whowishestoparticipate inanyextracurricularorco- curricularactivity.Whenthe numberof studentsallowedtoparticipate inateamor club mustbe limited,eachsupervisor/coachshall be responsiblefordeterminingwhichcandidateswill become membersof thatteam or club. Studentsmusthave a white cardwhichdeterminesif theyare eligible to participate. Studentswhoare noteligible,willnotbe consideredasparticipantsinthe sportsprogram. Expectationsand Purpose of the Book: The purpose of thisbook isto answerimportantquestionsthatparents,participants,coaches,and communitymembersmayhave. Itprovidesadetailedexplanationof expectationsinthe areasof the student’smental,physical,andemotionalgrowthasthey pertaintothe program. It isalso an effortto define roleswithinthe programtominimizeconfusionwithprogramparticipation. Withthese items outlined,thismanual canbe usedasan educational tool tohelpprovide deeperunderstandingtothe program’sexpectationsaswell asconsequencesfornotupholdingtheseexpectations. The information providedinthisbookare to be consideredafirmguide towhat isexpected,butthe athleticdepartment of BryanHigh School,the coachingstaff,andadministrationwithholdthe righttoimplementorchange the describedactionsbasedonwhatisbestfor the program. Seasonal Information: Bryan SeniorHigh’ssoftball programisnotonlyaFall sport,it is a yearlongcommitment. Athletesthat are lookingtoplayonthe BryanSeniorHighVarsitySoftball teamare expectedtoparticipate in pre- and post-seasonactivitiesthatinclude,butare notlimitedto the followingitems. Inthe itemslisted,the
  • 4. coachingstaff will make attemptstoassistintransportationtooff-site events,butitwill be the players’ and the players’families’responsibilitiestomake sure theyare inattendance.  Maintainingphysical andmental healthnecessarytoexecutingthe skillstobe successful in competition. Thiswouldmean conditioning,playingasa part of a teamwhennotinschool contests,attendingcamps,andstudyinggame situations. Athletesthatdonot engage inthese activitiesare notguaranteedaposition,butimprovestheirchancesdue toheightened awarenessand abilitylevel.  Volunteeringopportunitiesthatare bothon and off of school campus. Examplescouldbe to helpruncamps, concessionstands,orotherprogramsthat helppromote Bryanstudentathletes and the softball programasa whole. Opportunitieswill be lookedatasa programwide experience,playersshouldnotassume theyare notresponsible due totheirposition,team they’re playingon,orexperience level.  Engage in fundraisingopportunities. Fundraisersprovide additional incomeforthe team to participate inextraplayerdevelopment,update equipment,andprovide the teamwith promotional materials. Individualswhodonotmeetfundraisinggoalswhenorderingclothing will be expectedtopaythe difference tocoverthe costof the materials. Atnotime shoulditbe expectedthatthe softball programwillcoverthe costof additional materialsorexperiences. Preseason– Preseasonworkoutswill be communicatedthroughpersonal contactinformation. Informalworkouts for those studentsthat are not involvedinasummerteamwill beginapproximatelyamonthbefore the beginningof the season. These will notbe formal practices,butwaystoassessskillsearlyon,exercise and teambuilding. Itishighlyencouragedthatathletesengageinthisconditioningtobecome familiar withexpectations,prepare forthe seasonphysically,developmentalawarenessof the game,andmeet membersof the teaminan informal setting. Preseasonactivitieswill varybasedonexperienceand conditioninglevels. Season – Studentsare expectedtoupholdthe standardsdescribedinthishandbookandtheirOPScode of conduct. Studentsthatcheckoutmaterialsare responsible fortheirmaintenance andcare. All materials,unlessspecifiedbeforehand,will be returnedatthe endof the seasonas part of a team checkout. Anymaterialsthatare notreturnedastheywere checkedout,deemedunusable,orreturned at all,will be issuedafine forthe replacementof the materials. Scheduleswill be postedonthe Metro Conference website: http://www.mhsaaconference.org (SearchBryanHighSchool). Postseason– Studentsare responsible forreturningtheirmaterials. Inadditiontothis,coacheswill determine who letteredasa varsityplayer,establishawinterworkoutregimen,andansweranyquestionsparentsmay have aboutthe culminatingseasonorthe upcomingseason. School “Educationis the most powerful weaponwhich you can use to change the world.” ~NelsonMandela Behavior - Studentswhoparticipate withBryanHigh’ssoftballteamare expectedtoupholdalevelof professionalismandrespectabove anordinarystudent. Girlsare expectedtoupholdthe code of conduct inall settingsrelatingtoschool,bothduringandoutside school hours. Individualsthatreceive administrativediscipline,teacherreferrals,excessive tardies,orhave anegative teacherreportcan receive aconsequence throughsoftball. Consequencescanbe,notare notlimitedto,apologiestothe team,sittingoutof game(s),physical tasks,orremoval fromthe team. Each playerwill be lookedatin an individualbasis. Punishmentwill be discussedonlywiththe parentandthe playerinvolved,notthe entire teamorwithotherparentsunlessthe safetyof otherplayershasbeenjeopardized. Playerswhoare not representingthe BryanHighsoftball programthroughpositiveactionsorupholding the Bryan HighSchool code of conduct,may be askedto returntheirequipmentandremovedfromthe teamby the coaches’discretion. Grades- Bryan SeniorSoftball teamwill adheretothe guidelinesexpressedinthe studentcode of conductand NSAA eligibilityrequirements. Studentathletes,regardlessof positionandteamstanding,are required to maintainpassinggradesinordertoparticipate. Studentswhoare havingdifficultieswillbe required to attendacademiccoachingat least,or more if deemednecessary,aweek. Studentswhoare failinga classwill notbe permittedtoplayor will be atthe discretionof the coachingstaff if theyare making accommodationstomeettheiracademicgoal. Bryan SeniorSoftball hasbeenproudto proclaimanexcellence ineducationandgrades. The softball program hasboastedon of the highestGPA’sconsistentlythroughout all of BryanHigh’sathletic programs. Girls are expectedtoupholdthisstandardandcommunicate anyacademicdifficultiesbefore theybecome problematic. Coacheswillworkwithindividualstofindabalance betweenacademicsand athletics.

Don’t settle for anything other than respect.” ~Unknown General Conduct- Studentswhoparticipate withBryanHigh’ssoftballteamare expectedtoupholda levelof professionalismandrespectabove anordinarycommunitymember. Girlsare expectedtoupholdthe code of conductin all settingsrelatingtoschool,bothduringandoutside school hours. Individualsthat are involvedinorwithdrugs,alcohol,andpolice actioncanreceive aconsequencethroughsoftball. Consequencescanbe,notare not limitedto,apologiestothe team, sittingoutof game(s),physical tasks,or removal fromthe team. Each playerwill be lookedatinan individualbasis.Playersthatare suspectedof beingunderthe influence ata softball functionwillbe referredtoadministrative staff and handledthroughthe general code of conductproceduresorthe proceduresidentifiedbythe athletic director. Studentathletesthattest positive will be removedfromthe teamdue tosafetyandwellbeing concerns. Punishmentwill be discussedonlywiththe parentandthe playerinvolved,notthe entire teamor withotherparentsunlessthe safetyof otherplayershasbeenjeopardized. Volunteering– Athleteswill be requestedtoparticipate inactivitiesthatwill notresultindirectcompensation. Athletes may be requiredtoparticipate inactivitiesoutside of school hourstohelpraise money,betterthe community,mentoryouth,assistanotherBryanathleticteam, ordevote personal time inordertobuild the Bryan softball program. Issuesrelatingtovolunteeringeffortsmustbe communicatedwiththe coachingstaff. Failure tomeet volunteeringopportunitiescanresultina player’sinabilitytoreceive certainperks,participate in functions,ormaybe requiredtopayfor expenses. Individualsandconcernswillbe discussedonan individualizedbasisandplanswill be developedbasedonthe circumstances. Social Media- Social networkingisagreatway to expressyourself,keepincontactwithfriends,andbuildyour network.Asan OmahaBryan softball player,youare responsible forthe informationyouvoluntarypost on the online networks,suchasFacebook,MySpace andTwitter or any othersocial networkingsite.  No offensive orinappropriate picturesorinappropriate commentsare posted.  Do not violate the OmahaPublicSchoolscode of conduct. What youare postingmaynot onlyaffectyou,itmay affectothersas well.Youare free toexpress yourself onsocial networks.However,itisimportantthatyourespectthe privacyand rightsof others. Practice “If you don’t practice, you don’t deserve to win.” ~Andre Agassi Attendance – Attendance ismandatoryforall practices,scrimmages,gamesandfunctions.The coachingstaff understandscertainissuesmayarise,butanyabsencesmustbe approvedpriortothe incidentbya coach. Since participatesare studentathletes,attendance intheirregisteredclassesisalsorequired. Studentsmustbe presenttoat leasthalf of theirscheduleddaytobe eligible topractice orparticipate insports relatedfunctions. To ensure thatattendance isa priority,studentsshouldmodifytheirpersonalandworkschedulesto minimize conflict. Itisthe responsibilityof the studentathlete toadjusttheirschedulesbeforepractices and gamesbegin. Missingpractice due toworkis deemedanunexcusedabsence. Unexcusedabsencesmayresultinlimitedplaytime orremoval fromthe team. Excusedabsencesmust be documentedwithadoctor’snote or teacher’snote bythe nextpractice. Incidentsthateffectplay and statuswithinateam will onlybe discussedwiththe playerinvolvedandtheirfamilies. Coachesholdthe ultimate decisiononwhetherequipment will be used,bothpersonallyandschool provided.  Before Practice: o Playerswill checkthe practice scheduleandgatherequipmentfromthe storage location basedon the day’sdrills. o Playersalignthe equipmentinamannerthatcan easilybe gottentoandnot simply placedinone bigpile.  DuringPractice: o Playerswill use equipmentinthe specifiedmannerduringdrills.  PostPractice: o All playersassistinputtingmaterialsaway. Noplayeristoleave the fieldorpacktheir owngear until the team’sgeariscleanedup. Attitude – Attitude isasubjective indicatorof aplayer’sinvolvementwiththe sport. Coacheswillbe lookingat playersonwhethertheyare playingasif, “It’snow or never.”Withevery daythat passes,we getcloser and closerto the endof the softball seasonandthatstatementbecomesrelevant. Butthe truth is,you neverknowwhenyourlastgame,yourlast inning,yourlastatbat, or your lastplaywill be. Attitude will be addressedindividuallyandwill be inanefforttomaximize the opportunitiesourplayers’experience. Make eachopportunitycount. Playersmaynotagree withtheircoaches,parents,andfellow teammates,butourattitude expectation isthat theywill disagree inarespectful manner. Thiscomesacrossthroughwords,actions,andbody language. Wordsshouldalwaysbe encouraging,actionsshouldbe purposeful,andourbodylanguage shouldbe that of a respectedindividual. Coacheswill administerconcernswith attitudeandeffortwith the playersinitially,butmayinvolve parentsif needbe. Consequencesmaybe administeredtoaddress attitude concernsonan individualbasis.

Transportationwill be providedbythe school and leave the school at a predeterminedtime. Studentsthatwill be participatingortravelingwiththe team as a spectator,are expectedtobe at the buson time. It isthe responsibilityof the coachingstaff to allowforadequate travel time,provide safe transportation,and ensure thatathletesare present. Due to safetyconcerns,studentsare notallowedtotransportthemselves. Exceptionswill be made ona time-by-timebasisanddiscussedwiththe coachingstaff. Studentswhoare grantedexceptions are expectedtoadhere tosafe drivingpractices,parkinginappropriatelocations,andwill nottransport otherplayers. Playersmayleave withtheirparentsorotherfamilymemberafterthe game aslongas they communicate theirdeparture toacoach. Playerscan provide otherplayersaride withpriorapproval fromboth players’guardians. Athletesare notpermittedtoleave withasignificantotherorundisclosed individual. It isthe player’sresponsibilitytoarrange a ride fromthe game or school. Individualsare requiredtohave a helmetonwhile onoffence,ondeck,andin-the-hole (batter,nextup, and the batterafter). o Bats are to be hungproperly,notsimplylaidonthe groundor stuckin the fence. o Knowwhere yourglove isat all times.
