A. Personal Statement:
I recently helped Biomedical Development Corp create their successful proposal to NIH to explore the relative
importance of factors leading to Alzheimer’s Dementia (funded 2012-13) and after award, to [1] direct the subcontract
work of my small consulting firm, RossW3, and [2] deliver the developed software to BDC. This software included an
application to support data entry, score generation, analysis, and reporting of neuropsychological evaluations and
vestibular evaluations; simple software versions of two standard topographical memory tests; and a specialized
version of the Research Decision Support tools that I have been working on over some years. My education and
experience made me well qualified for these tasks and my references can attest to our success.
I have completed graduate education in several areas: TESOL/ESL, English Literature, Applied Linguistics, Cognitive
Psychology, Educational Psychology and Teaching Methods, Software Engineering, Knowledge-based and Intelligent
Systems, Scientific Visualization, and Human-computer Interaction. I have wide experience in creating data intensive
applications with cognitively effective visual interfaces. I also led an SBIR funded effort to use 3D and virtual reality
interfaces in cognitive evaluation and rehabilitation and in vocational exploration for persons with brain injury. I have
recently created a proposal to use a game-based approach to track progress in treating neuropsychological disorders
including ADHD. I started my undergraduate education as a physics major, then changed to mathematics and
languages and obtained secondary certification in mathematics, English, French and German and taught grades 6-12
in small town schools while raising my children. After completing an MS in Computer Science, I transitioned to
information technology development and management and eventually research in software applications to support
education and medicine. I was able to combine my research and business interests and qualifications with SBIR-
funded projects at small companies for two decades. Research for which I won funding included a project to expand
GIS for the Army, to strengthen Learner Modeling in Intelligent Tutors for the Office of Naval Research, and to
automate the processing of laboratory tests for the Air Force Research Lab. Although I retired a few years ago to
2. spend more time with my grandchildren in San Antonio, for the past two years I have been back at work professionally
as a consultant and also renewing my former commitment to develop research decision support tools that could be
specialized to assist researchers by managing their data and controlling versions of research design/protocols and
software used. I have also helped teach in a church-based ESL program for which I have developed curriculum
materials. I am currently accepting projects in San Antonio that fit my capabilities and allow me time with my
grandchildren. This has included tutoring in English, math, GMAT, GRE and special needs as well as mentoring in
project management and proposal development. My recent “mentees” have won three grants totaling $800,000.
