ALTHOUGH WE ARE DOING SOME COOL THINGS ON HEALTH
EDUCATION, IT’S NOT ENOUGH!
What measures can we take from the “whole institution”?
How are policies and systems being changed?
How is the setting being changed?
How is the culture of the “whole institution” being
changed?
How is the “whole population” being impacted?
How is the “whole population” being impacted?
7. Learning with Purpose
WHAT IS THE REAL REASON STUDENTS AREN’T GETTING
ENOUGH SLEEP?
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE IMPEDIMENTS TO SLEEP?
8. Learning with Purpose
SETTINGS-BASED APPROACH
WHY ARE STUDENTS NOT GETTING ENOUGH SLEEP?
IMPEDIMENT 1: LONG COMMUTE TO SCHOOL
SOURCE: UMASS LOWELL COMMON DATA SET
• Increase on-campus housing to affordable rates for students
• Shift students from commuter or off-campus to living in on-campus residence halls
• From 2003 to 2022, on-campus housing has increased from 32% to 39%
• By having more students living on campus, we’ve created an environment where students
have shorter commutes and can sleep more

IMPEDIMENT 2 : OFF CAMPUS JOBS
SOURCE: UMASS LOWELL REPORT CARD, MASS.GOV, UML.EDU
• Advocate for more on campus career connected work and experiential learning
opportunities with adequate wages
• Establish new portal for student employment (JobHawk)
• Massachusetts minimum wage increased to twice the U.S. national average ($14.25
vs $7.25)
• Created specific funding opportunities that allow students to work and learn on
campus (Moloney Student Fellowship Fund)
• More professional co-op programs to keep students working in local community with
closer proximity to the university (83 in 2010 -> 895 in 2020)
• Work from home/dorm opportunities for students
• By creating an environment where students are paid better wages, students can work
less hours and have more time to sleep
• By creating an environment with great job opportunities closer to campus, students have
less commute and can spend more time sleeping
