Maker Survey, which measures the enterprise mobility issues facing IT today.
Quantitative data is paired with qualitative insight from Enterprise Mobility
Channel Analysts for several key trends that are impacting IT’s day-to-day
battle to support, secure and enable mobile workers.
Key Findings
• While the key buyers for mobility are often unclear, today IT remains the key agent
for determining mobile budgets. In two years’ time this will start to shift in a big way
to lines of business.
• Our IT decision-maker survey shows that almost 40% of the entire workforce now
classify as mobile workers, which we define as employees who spend more than a
fifth of their average working week in mobile circumstances away from their primary
workspace.
• IT’s support for mobility is already shifting away from the traditional killer app that
is mobile email. The drivers for mobile support are spread across third-party apps,
custom apps and productivity tools.
• Security remains the primary obstacle for IT decision-makers to support mobile
workers. This revolves around the concern about loss of corporate IP and the mixing
of that corporate data with personal content on employee-owned devices.
• There will be seismic shifts in the operating systems that IT supports today and those
it will need to support in two years. The tablet market may need to evolve to keep up
with the capabilities of converging OSs.
• Almost half of all large companies are planning on increasing the amount of in-house
development they do over the next 12 months, while 16% plan to decrease it.
• A significant proportion of companies are in fact still custom-building from scratch
or using a patchwork of external libraries and sources to create their own unique
backend integrations for their mobile apps.
