Fast Five
Defensive Philosophy
Simple is Better
Teaching Principles
• Clarity
• Specificity
• Priority (what is most important)
• Emphasis (know how to execute)
• Process informs results
1. Ball Pressure
• Crawl up into them
• Hoosiers “what flavor gum are they chewing?”
• Smell their breath
• Breathe fire onto them (fire-breathing dragon)
2. Limit Tasks
• Pressure the ball
• Deny on the strong side
• Help and recover
• Trap and recover
• Force people out of their comfort zone
3. Objectives
• Be the aggressors
• Establish and control TEMPO
• Wear opposition down
• Force errors
• Turn defense into offense
• Win every possession
4. Clear “End-State”
• What will good defense look like?
• No Easy Baskets (Hard 2s)
• Protect the paint (own blocks and elbows)
• No direct drives
• Contested shots without fouling
5. Measurables
• Opponent should have > 25 turnovers
• Allow less than 1 point per minute
• Get > 75 percent of defensive rebounds
• 372 (3 stops in a row, 7 times a half, each half)
