3. When Tom Watson Jr. of IBM agreed to underwrite
the introduction of the then little known Peace Corps
for the Seattle World’s Fair, Dramaturgy, a recognized
major producer of industrial shows and expositions,
was awarded the contract. Romm, a Dramaturgy
producer, was tasked with design oversight and
management of the Pavilion and subsequent College
Recruitment Tour. Since its inception the Peace Corps
has recruited 220,000 volunteers that have served in
140 countries, enhancing the lifestyles of developing
nations.
31. NASCAR VIRTUAL REALITY
Fluor Advance Technology was mandated by its
chairman to evaluate NASCAR Virtual Reality
Simulation Technology so that wannabe race car
drivers could experience the thrill of racing at 200
miles per hour. The concept was to follow the
NASCAR race circuit using a series of four
interconnected trailers containing the simulations.
With Romm producing traveling shows, he was
retained to undertake a business assessment for a
multi-million dollar investment. With 75 million avid
NASCAR fans and 100,000± attending each race, the
market potential was clearly manifest. A major
concern was could facility throughput satisfy pent-up
demand. A more pressing consideration was a lack of
a “Proof of Concept”. Assuming a show could be
successfully mounted …. would it be profitable? A
couple of rainy race days per season would reduce
the ROI. To the disappointment of the chairman, the
Doultons recommended that Fluor pass on the
opportunity.
32. FILM LIBRARY IP VALUATION
Credit Lyonnais found itself owning MGM Studios
based upon a $1.2 billion acquisition by an
international con man. Having foreclosed, under
French law the bank had a specific time in which it
must find a buyer. As the cream of the film library
had been sold to Ted Turner and the studio lot sold, it
was difficult to identify any tangible assets. The
Doultons selected titles of the remaining 1900
motion pictures and 3000 television shows as
marketable intellectual properties for theme parks,
video games, board games and slot machines; all four
categories are licensed to third parties. With the
valuation of the asset addressed, Kirk Kerkorian
repurchased the studio from Credit Lyonnais. Today
MGM Studios is valued at more than $7 billion.

36. This bronze sculpture is larger than life (30”,
weighing 20 pounds). It was fashioned by
renowned wildlife artist Emiel Hartman and cast in
the centuries old lost wax methord in a single
pouring at a 400-year-old art foundary in Pietra
Santa Itlaly. The entire edition of the Falcon and
Gauntlet was quickly acquired by a number of
Middle Eastern heads of state and royalty. These
limited editions rarely come to the Auction
market, but when it does it commands multiples
of its original issue price ($10,000).
37. SPIRIT OF THE WIND
Spencer Hodge, noted wildlife painter and sculptor,
lived on the top of mountain in a live rock cave at
the base of the ruins of Roquebrune Castle, above
Monaco. With the success of the Falcon and
Gauntlet the Doultons commissioned Spencer to
sculpt a second falcon. The falcons tracers trail from
the mane of a bridled Arabian stallion . Its
incredibly complex form was cast in broinze in a
single lost wax mold by Fonderia Venturi Arte of
Cadriano, Italy employing space age techniques.
Spencer’s work is owned by the late Prince Rainier
of Monaco and Phince Philip of the UK. His wildlife
prints, posters and original paitnings are collected
worldwide.
38. As a memento, the Hajj Medallion and black cube
Kaaba-shaped case was commissioned by the
Doultons and produced by the official French Mint
Le Monnaie du Paris. The medallion was one of the
largest ever produced, weighing one kilo (2.2
pounds) of .925 fine silver and guilded in 18 karat
gold. It was stamped in deepest possible relief,
heated to 900 degrees and required 20 precise
strikes employing a 20,000 pound kiesselbach
stamping press.
39. With the fine reception received by the Hajj
Medallion the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia commis-
sioned the Doultons and the French Mint to
create a similar commemorative medallion for
the ascendance to the Saudi Throne of King Fahd
Abdul Azziz. The medallion was housed in a
hand-blown, clear crystal presentation casket
produced by Daum Glass. Fifty medallions were
produced as gifts to heads of state of Moslim
Countries.
40. In association with members of London’s
National Gallery, Royal Society of Portrait
Painters, the Doultons were commissioned by
various Middle Eastern countries to provide
handpainted portaits of rulers for display in
national embassies and government buildings.
Photographs provided by each ruler were
faithfully reproduced in oil on canvas by
member artists, via rota, based upon an
individual artist’s availability. Portraits were
museum framed with a dosier describing the
artist’s background.
