III. PROBLEM PRESENTED:
The client, Freah Plaza was suspected pregnant because she had no menstruation
for 2 months and she is seeking medical and financial assistance for her pregnancy
and to continue her studies to help her family.
IV. HISTORY OF THE PROBLEM:
Freah has a boyfriend, they are now living together and renting a boarding house
at Lagao General Santos City, her boyfriend Maky is 21 years old, much older than
her for 5 years. They are already 2 years in a relationship, she is suspected pregnant
because she has no menstruation for 2 months. She already did the pregnancy test
and it came out positive, but her boyfriend wants abortion. They have no enough
money to go for prenatal check-up. Freah wants to pursue her studies but she wasn’t
able to continue because no one is supporting her even her family that’s why she
agree to live with her boyfriend who can give and sustain her for her needs and wants
especially in school.
V. BACKGROUND
I. THE CLIENT
Freah is the youngest among of her 3 siblings, she is kind and bubbly during the
interview. She has a positive appearance although she was not yet ready to become
a mother. She is currently Grade 8 level and taking module class. At the age of 13 she
met the guy named Maky at school where she’s studying as part time student and
they fell in love with each other, they decided to live together because her mother
FREAH 15 SINGLE CLIENT STUDENT N/A N/A
wants her to stop schooling and just find a job for their daily necessities but Freah
refused to stop studying. That’s why she agreed to live with her boyfriend just to
continue her studies, Macky is currently employed at ANR Company as loiner. Her
boyfriend wants her to abort the baby because they have no enough money to sustain
the needs of the baby but Freah wants to keep the baby. The couple is now struggling
and the conflict between them is getting worst. Freah is determined to finish her
studies but now she is in despair due to financial constraint because of her situation,
she cannot decide on her own and confused.
II. THE FAMILY
Freah has three siblings, her mother is a plain housewife, she is currently having
an affair with a man and they are not married, her father was killed in an NBI buy bust
operation in 2017. Her other siblings have their own families as well. Her brother is
currently with her mother in Maitum Sarangani province and still studying. Their life
was hard and simple, her mother wanted them to stop studying to help them. Her other
siblings (sisters) also send money for groceries but it is not enough because her
mother’s partner is a gambler.
III. THE COMMUNITY
The community where Freah and her live-in partner Macky currently live is not
clean and is noisy. But both provides for their own food. There is no proper gutter and
toilet because they only pay 800 pesos monthly rent for the boarding house. The water
use is limited because it is scheduled per room/unit. The owner of the renting place is
extremely strict due to Covid restrictions and visitors are not allowed inside to sleep
and spend a lot of time in that place.
VI. ASSESSMENT
Freah is one of the young people who is experiencing teenage pregnancy. She is
a minor and is below the legal age to look for a full-time job to support her own needs
and her child’s needs. Continuing her studies is her right but she should consider her
condition. During pregnancy, a woman’s body needs more care and nutrition. And it
is advised for pregnant women to have enough rest, proper diet and exercise, and
enough sleep. Studying during pregnancy is allowed in most school and institutions
in tertiary level (college level) but since Freah is Grade 8 and is currently taking
modular class she might be able to continue her studies. Our local government units
especially in barangays are offering free prenatal check-up. Freah can avail these
services in her respective barangay healthcare unit.
This Assessment Statement is supported by Sigmund Freud’s Psychosexual
Theory. In Freah’s case, her problem started when her mother wants her to stop
studying in order to look for a job. As a result, Freah’s transition betweenPhallic
and Genital Stage which is the Latency Stage has been affected. Instead of
repressing her sexual desires to focus on academics, sports and/or hobbies
that she should be doing at her age, she found herself benefiting from focusing
her attention to the opposite sex (Macky) which led to living together at the age
of 13. Latency Stage usually occurs in puberty period which starts at 11 years
old for most girls. According to Freud’s theory, Latency Stage is the period
when a child transitions to Genital Stage where he/she develops normal to
mature relationships to opposite sex. Freud believes that a child goes through
the five stages of development and the success and failure of his/her
development in each stage affects the next stage of development. The conflict
between Freah’s parents and she led to the issues she currently has. She was
not able to go through the Latency Stage properly due to how her parents raised
her. For some children, they overcome these conflicts and move on to the next
development stage successfully. And Freah’s case is one of those many
children who struggled to overcome the conflict.
The conflict in Freah’s case also aroused becauseher family cannot support
her studies. Which is therefore also supported by Ecological Systems Theory
by Urie Bronfenbrenner. Freah’s Microsystem which consist of her family,
school and peers directly affected her development. The support that her family
gives has a great impact on her development as a teenager. The death of his
father, which led to her mother’s affair to another man changed her family
environment. The initiative of her mother to make her children stop studying in
order to prioritize food deprived her of her right to study or hinder her from
having proper education. She was directly affected by her family’s situation.
Her siblings might have helped her and support her studies, but they also have
their own family to support. As a result, Freah had to run away from home. Her
mother’s affair with another man who is a gambler also directly affected their
financial capacity to provide for Freah and her siblings’ basic needs in order to
grow and develop.
With regards to Freah’s boyfriend, Macky 21 years old, who believes abortion
is the best solution to their problem is supported by Kohlberg’s Theory of Moral
Development. This theory has three main levels, Pre-Conventional Moral
Development, Conventional Development and Post-Conventional Development.
On the third level, Stage 5 which is the Social Contract Legalistic Orientations
states that, a person’s moral judgment is not seen to be right or absolute since
other do not have the moral authority to judge a person’s choice. Macky
believes that they have the freedom to choose, and they have the right to
choose what best solves their moral problem which is abortion. His morality
right conflicts with the legal right because abortion is illegal in Philippines.
Moreover, their living condition at present makes it difficult to raise a child in
such environment. Perhaps, Macky thinks it’s best for them to abort the child.
VII. INTERVENTION PLAN WITH SMART GOAL (ASSUMING)
GOAL: To associate the client’s problem and giving assistance for family
planning and counselling and other needs for pregnancy care for the client.
VIII. RECOMMENDATION(ASSUMING)
Given that fact that she is under the legal age, parenting and life skills classes may
help her have more knowledge about pregnancy and motherhood. Since abortion
remains illegal in our country, and the client’s partner is considering abortion, they
both need to undergo family planning and counselling.
