The Grade 6s spent two wonderful nights at the Wak-
kerstroom Bird Life Centre last week. They studied Grass-
lands and looked at why these play such an important part in
the ecology of the planet. Many tiny and beautiful forbs were
found among the many grasses. Much fun was had fishing
and identifying small insects and other aquatic creatures from
a healthy wetland system. The vital role of wetlands and the
threat they are under was made very apparent to the group,

group headed out with binoculars, to the western side of the
wetland. There an exciting time identifying the many birds
found on the wetland from a hide followed. The thrilling finds
among others, were a Marsh Harrier swooping along the
edges of the wetland as well as two brightly coloured Purple
Swamp Hens. Wattled Crane, Southern Crowned Crane, an
otter and a yellow mongoose also caused excitement for the
more persistent birders. The Grade 6s and Mrs Evans would
like to thank Mr Don de Boer for accompanying them, Mrs
Silke More O’Ferrall for organizing the groceries and Mrs
Pauline Naude and Mrs Kim Hastings for assisting with the
finances.
