Fordham University in New
York
Fordham University is a private university in New York City, United States of America. The Right
Rev. John Hughes founded St. John's College on Old Rose Hill Manor in the village of Fordham,
then part of Westchester County, in 1841. Fordham gets its name from the Anglo-Saxon terms
"ford" and "ham," which imply "a wading spot or ford by a settlement." Robert Watts gave the
location the name Rose Hill in 1787. Bishop Hughes recruited five French Jesuits from St. Mary's
College in Kentucky and other communities in 1846. This was the year the New York State
Legislature granted the College a charter, and the Society of Jesus took over the governance of
the College. The institution's name was changed to Fordham University in 1907. Fordham
University has three locations in and around the city of New York.
Fordham University enrolls about 8,000 undergraduates and 7,000 graduate students on three
campuses in New York State: Rose Hill in the Bronx, Lincoln Center in Manhattan, and
Westchester in West Harrison. In addition to the United States, the university has programs in the
People's Republic of China and the United Kingdom. Fordham University offers bachelor's,
master's, and doctoral degrees.
Fordham University's four undergraduate colleges and six graduate schools include the Fordham
Graduate School of Social Service and the Fordham School of Law. In addition, in collaboration
with Case Western Reserve University and Columbia University, the university provides five-year
dual-degree BA/BS engineering programs and a BFA degree program in dance in partnership
with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. The university was founded on the same grounds
as Fordham Preparatory School, a four-year, all-male college preparatory school. "Fordham Prep"
moved to its own premises adjoining the Rose Hill campus's northwest corner after legally
