THE SHIPPING INDUSTRY
CONTRIBUTES TO AIR POLLUTION
THAT IS HARMFUL TO HEALTH
Our seas are busy places:
Over 75,000 vessels ply the world’s shipping
lanes, emitting dangerous levels of Sulphur
(SOx), NOx and Particulate Matter from the fuel oil
that they burn for propulsion
Sodaflexx is focussed on reducing ship
emissions, particularly SOx and Particulate
Matter emissions, as these are harmful to
humans, animals, and oceans, causing:
Respiratory problems &
lung disease
Stroke & cardiovascular
disease
Acidification of oceans,
affecting marine life
Harm to forests
Damage to crops, affecting
the food cycle
Major impact to vulnerable areas, i.e.
coastal communities
Shipping is still the
most energy-efficient
mode of transport by
energy / tonne-mile and
it only consumes close
to 3% of the world’s
energy, including 8% of
the world’s annual oil
supply

IMO HAS MANDATED THAT SHIP
OWNERS TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION TO
DRASTICALLY REDUCE SULPHUR
EMISSIONS
On 1January 2020, the UN agency International
Maritime Organisation (IMO) mandate came into
force to tackle air pollution emitted by the shipping
industry
IMO 2020 sets clear guidelines
about reducing SOx emissions
from fuel oil burned by ships
IMO 2020 means a mandatory
reduction of 77% in overall SOx
emissions from shipping
3.5%S
to
0.5%S

“The IMO is on the
verge of agreeing on
and implementing the
first tranche of
additional GHG
regulations, expected
to enter into force in
2023” per DNV GL Maritime
Forecast to 2050
4. COMMITTED TO THE ENVIRONMENT
SHIP OWNERS HAVE TO
COMPLY WITH IMMEDIATE
EFFECTThere are 3 options
Burn low
sulphur fuel oil.
Readily available, but:
• Expensive
compared to HSFO
• Production process
is detrimental to the
environment
• Smaller particulates
are harmful to
respiratory health
Alternative Fuels
such as LNG, Hydrogen,
Ammonia, etc
• Engine technology and
distribution infrastructure
not widespread
• Scarce supply
• Extremely expensive
Burn high sulphur
fuel oil and install an
Exhaust Gas Cleaning
System (EGCS) aka
“scrubber”
There are two types:
Wet System
Dry System

5. COMMITTED TO THE ENVIRONMENT
THE EGCS METHOD IS MORE
COST-EFFECTIVE LONG
TERM
There are two ways
to scrub exhaust
gas emitted by
ships
A
Wet Scrubber
Approximately 3,500 vessels have
installed this technology, but the method
of “Open Loop” operation discharges
wash water effluent directly into the sea,
and is increasingly becoming banned by
Port States. These systems are very
expensive to install and operate.
B
Dry Scrubber
Injects sodium bicarbonate into the
exhaust gas stream to neutralise sulphur
compounds. With capture and treatment
systems, provides exhaust gas cleaning
with ZERO discharge. Relatively
inexpensive and easy to install.

a trillion-dollar question

SODAFLEXX EGCS IS THE
GREEN SOLUTION FOR THE
MARINE INDUSTRY
Sodaflexx uses proven technology that has been used in
shore based power stations and waste-to-energy plants for
decades
The Sodaflexx EGCS injects sodium bicarbonate directly into
the exhaust gas stream to neutralise the sulphur components
via a chemical reaction resulting in harmless sodium sulphate
Sodium bicarbonate
NaHCO3
The Sodaflexx EGCS captures and treats the sodium
sulphate and other combustion by products to provide
exhaust gas cleaning with ZERO discharge
Sodium bicarbonate
is:
Readily available
Stable
Odourless
Non-toxic
Non-corrosive
Non-explosive

CLEAN AIR
• Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3 ) is injected directly
into a ship’s exhaust depending on fuel oil
consumption and sulphur concentration
• The NaHCO3 reacts with the sulphur compounds in
the fuel to create sodium sulphate (Na2SO4), a
benign salt
• The sodium sulphate is captured, treated, and
safely disposed of onshore, and clean air is emitted
from the funnel

SODAFLEXX EGCS
Makes vessels IMO 2020
compliant by reducing
SOx emissions
Simple design: no hazardous
chemicals, wash water
discharge etc
Global absorbent
supply network
already in place
Low
maintenance
Quick to install with short
lead time; no need for dry
docking
Sodium bicarbonate is
both cheap and readily
available
Inexpensive system –
cheapest EGCS on the
market

“While the IMO GHG Strategy is
currently driving policy
development in shipping, we also
see national and regional
regulations, market incentives
from charterers and others, and
public pressure for shipping to
contribute its fair share to limiting
average global warming to 1.5ºC”
per DNV GL Maritime Forecast 2050
