developing, and deploying technical initiatives to the energy industry that coordinate multiple
disciplines. Effectively bridges academic and industrial approaches to sustainable energy
development. Excellent oral, written, and presentation skills and can provide vision, leadership,
technical expertise, and workforce development for diverse global constituencies. Subject Matter
Expert in reservoir/overburden geomechanics, geodetic reservoir monitoring, knowledge sharing
and expertise capture, and subsurface containment assurance.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
ConocoPhillips Company, Houston, Texas
Principal Geomechanicist 2011–2015
• Provided global leadership to geosciences, reservoir engineering, and drilling and wells
across the company’s exploration and production activities in onshore and offshore assets.
• Jointly framed and led the conceptualization, development, implementation, and global
deployment of subsurface containment assurance methods, tools, and training programs;
saved $100 million in pipeline costs in Indonesia alone.
• Global technical project management including onshore deformation monitoring program
(Indonesia), integration of geomechanics infrastructure for deepwater assets.
• Technical project experience in fractured crystalline reservoirs, heavy oil, deepwater assets.
• Monitored and engaged university research-and-development groups and consortia for
reservoir characterization.
• Designed and implemented global SharePoint and OneWiki knowledge sharing platforms
across geosciences, reservoir engineering, operations, drilling and completions.
• Co-inventor of 2 intellectual property patent applications.
• Mentored 3 Ph.D. graduate summer interns on overburden characterization, fault stability in
overburden sequences, and wastewater injection in fields located in North Sea and Indonesia.
• Authored approximately 50 significant internal technical reports and presentations to
technical workshops and senior management.
Consultant (Orion Geomechanics; www.oriongeomechanics.com) 1990–present
Major oil and gas companies, precious metals exploration and mining companies; recent work:
• Weatherford International Customer Advisory Board: Geomechanics product development.
• MetaRock Laboratories: Liaise with oil and gas customers for rock mechanics testing.
• Shell International Exploration and Production: Deformation and compaction bands in
eolian reservoir analogs.
• Chevron Petroleum Technology: Deformation at relay-ramps along graben systems.
University of Nevada, Reno, Nevada
Foundation Professor; Professor of Geological Engineering and Geomechanics; Associate
Professor; Assistant Professor 1990–2011

• Published more than 115 papers in peer-reviewed journals, 4 edited volumes, and more than
250 abstracts and presentations with more than 50 invited seminars to academia and industry.
• Created 16 courses in geology, structural geology, geomechanics, geological engineering,
rock mechanics, and planetary science; raised more than $5 million in research support.
• Trained 5 Ph.D. students, 13 M.S. students, 2 postdoctoral scholars (now working as
university faculty) to use creative and innovative methods to pose and solve problems in
structural geology and geomechanics over a wide range of technical disciplines including
growth and scaling of fractures, faults, and deformation bands; rock slope stability;
deformation of layered sedimentary sequences; and planetary tectonics.
Invited Visiting Professor
Université Montpellier II, Montpellier, France; Université de Paris-Sud, Paris, France;
Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris, France; MIT/Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
• Brought novel approaches and catalyzed multi-disciplinary research projects leading to
multiple collaborative publications in mechanics of soft-rock deformation and rock fracture
mechanics.
