The Bahamas is a popular tourist destination for fishing thanks to its open fishing policies and association with Ernest Hemingway. Visitors often debate which island offers the best fishing, with Bimini known as the "Sport Fishing Capital of the World" for holding over 50 world records. Grand Bahama offers charter boats for tourists without their own vessels, while the Berry Islands attract bait fish and larger game fish. The islands are known for marlin, tuna, bonefish, and occasional shark, with fishing tournaments running year-round and the prestigious Bahamas Billfish Competition occurring annually from April to June.
1. Where the warm Caribbean sun meets bracing Atlantic breeze, a shallow
reefs drop off to oceanic depths and fishing legends are born. The
Bahamas has been popularised as a leading tourist fishing destination
thanks to its open-to-all policy and links to fishing greats like Ernest
Hemingway, the Bahamas are perfect for battles of wit, skill and strength
for sport fishers worldwide.
Visitors frequently argue about which island offers the best fishing, each
having its own unique advantages and features that help to make them
a firm favourite among fisherman. Sport fishers are often drawn to the
island of Bimini, the closest island to the USA, where the Gulf Stream
feeds it a never-ending supply of aquatic life. With over 50 World Fishing
Records caught in its waters alone, Bimini is known as the “Sport Fishing
Capital of the World.”
Meanwhile, Grand Bahama is a perfect tourist stop for boat-less
tourists looking to join in the fun; offering more frequent charter ships
than its sister islands, it’s the perfect opportunity to hone skills before
heading out to the open seas. Similarly, The Berry Islands’ many cays
draw bait fish in, which in turn draws larger sport for the discerning
fisher to try their hand at big-game fishing, occasionally even luring in
record breakers.

2. Behemoths of the Bahamas include blue and white
marlin, swordfish and a variety of mammoth tuna
(including blackfin and allison.) With the Bahamas’
close proximity to both the Atlantic Ocean and
Caribbean Sea, the islands are also well known for
a variety of tropical fish and big game, including its
iconic bonefish population. Thrill seekers are even
known to try and battle the occasional shark, much
as the titular character in Hemingway’s novel The
Old Man and the Sea did (the book itself based on
the author’s experiences fishing around Bimini.)
Tournaments run throughout the year on all of
the Bahamas islands, though the most popular
tournaments run from January through to June.
From April to June the internationally renowned
Bahamas Billfish Competition runs daily, pitting
fisherman of all levels against each other in a
competition which is recognised as the Olympics
of the fishing world. Prime fishing season in the
Bahamas tends to be April to September, though
near perpetual idyllic conditions mean that winter
fishing is still extremely popular for any seafarer
looking to fish in a much less competitive setting.
