1. Dear Sir/Madam,
I am a Media and Journalism graduate from Nottingham Trent University and currently
looking for a role in a competitive industry to build upon what I have previously learnt
throughout my degree, and also through work experience.
I have worked as an intern at ‘Mother and Baby’ and ‘Top Santé’ magazine at Bauer media in
Peterborough, where I saw the process of production for both magazine’s in a busy, but
vibrant office. I also researched particular brands and products that make parenting easier for
the ‘Mother and Baby’ magazine, and assisted with a photo shoot. Calling in medical
products and liaising with PR’s as well as finding feature ideas from newspapers made my
involvement in the team count.
I have an aptitude to work under pressure and meet deadlines having worked for my student
magazine ‘Platform’ publishing numerous articles and online features. As a person of drive
and enthusiasm I am highly motivated to build upon the skills and attributes I have learnt as a
working journalism student.
Work experience along with my degree has given me the fundamentals to pursue further. Not
only have I learnt the techniques to write a tasteful feature story, I have also learnt that
journalism can be an effective marketing tool in public relations.
I am able to demonstrate strong communication skills, and leadership. I have exceptional ICT
and computing abilities using HTML in web development, as well as an exceptional
understanding of Microsoft. I have a creative flare with an eye for detail, and work hard to
meet specific deadlines. I am good at using my own initiative, as well as being a good team
player.
Even though it is within our nature to care, we lose track of this instinct in large groups. From
school to company bored rooms, we feel disconnected from people. People from across the
table, across the country and especially across the world. I have always had a heightened
capacity for empathy. When I was 9 I remember crying at countless Disney films, especially
‘The Lion King’ when Simba is feeling lost without his father. Many children empathise with
animals, but I never grew out of it. I still cry at Disney movies, and even wedding
2. commercials. But empathy isn’t passive commercial watching, its observation and its activity.
It’s putting yourself in someone else’s shoes, which requires the ability and the courage to
ask the right questions, because when people know you’re really listening they open up.
Empathy is how I build close, lasting friendships, it’s why I work so effective ly in teams. It’s
both why and how I want to design a better world. It still allows me to be that 9 year old, with
the ability and the courage to see others point of view, to ask difficult questions, to act on my
beliefs and ultimately help others. Whether this is by consuming a product through one of my
advertisements or PR campaigns, this is what I want to do throughout my career.
I have attached a copy of my CV for your perusal, however it would be great if we could
meet to discuss my portfolio of published works. Obviously you will have a number of
applicants looking for work, but believe my committed approach to journalism will set me a
part.
I look forward in speaking with you about any upcoming roles that may fit my skillset.
I am flexible, willing to relocate and available to start work immediately.
Yours sincerely
Miss Rhianne Segger.
