Medical Device Company Intelligence Reports provide a full review of the company's activities, from its origins to its latest corporate
activity, including mergers and acquisitions, agreements, divestitures, major purchasing contracts and litigation. Sections are included
on products, international activities and R&D, as well as a full, in-depth five year financial analysis. An introduction to each report and
a full table of contents is provided for review. More than 60 Medical Device Company Intelligence Reports are currently
available.Varian Medical Systems (Varian or VMS) claims to be the world's leading designer and manufacturer of equipment and
software products for treating cancer and other medical conditions with radiotherapy, stereotactic radiosurgery, brachytherapy and
proton therapy. The company also designs and manufactures X-ray tubes and flat panel digital image detectors for filmless X-ray
imaging for use in medical, dental, veterinary, scientific and industrial applications. Furthermore, VMS designs and manufactures
linear accelerators, digital image detectors, image processing software and image detection products for security and inspection
purposes.

VMS has approximately 5,100 employees located at more than 79 sales offices, manufacturing sites and other facilities worldwide.
The company divides its business into three main segments:

Oncology Systems ' its largest business segment ' designs, manufactures, sells and services hardware and software products for
treating cancer. Its products include linear accelerators, brachytherapy afterloaders, treatment simulation and verification equipment
and accessories, as well as information management, treatment
planning and image processing software. Its products enable radiation oncology departments in hospitals and clinics to perform
conventional radiotherapy treatments and offer the advanced treatment processes of fixed field intensity-modulated radiation therapy
(IMRT), image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) and stereotactic radiotherapy, as well as to
treat patients using brachytherapy techniques, which involve radiation treatment of tumours with implanted radioactive sources. VMS
products are also used by neurosurgeons to perform stereotactic radiosurgery.
X-ray Products ' designs, manufactures and sells X-ray imaging components and subsystems, including: (i) X-ray tubes for use in a
range of applications including computed tomography (CT) scanning, radiographic or fluoroscopic imaging, mammography, special
procedures and industrial applications; and (ii) flat panel digital
image detectors for filmless X-ray imaging, an alternative to image intensifier tubes for fluoroscopy and X-ray film and computed
radiography (CR) systems for radiography.
Varian's X-ray tubes and flat panel detectors are sold to a limited number of large imaging system OEM customers that incorporate
these X-ray imaging components and subsystems into their medical diagnostic imaging systems and industrial imaging systems. The
company's X-ray tubes are also sold directly to end-users for replacement

purposes. Furthermore, VMS flat panel detectors are being incorporated into next-generation imaging equipment, including equipment
for IGRT and for dental CT scanning and veterinary X-ray imaging.

VMS' 'Other' category combines three other businesses:

The Security and Inspection Products (SIP) business designs, manufactures, sells and services Linatron X-ray accelerators, imaging
processing software and image detection products (including IntellX) for security and inspection purposes, such as cargo screening at
ports and borders and non-destructive examination in a variety of applications.

The Varian Particle Therapy (formerly ACCEL Proton Therapy) business designs, develops, manufactures and services products and
systems for delivering proton (or particle) therapy, another form of external beam radiation therapy using proton beams for the
treatment of cancer. VMS acquired the ACCEL Proton Therapy business in January 2007 to expand its product offerings in proton
therapy. In April 2009, VMS sold the Research Instruments division of ACCEL in order to focus that business exclusively on the
development of the particle therapy business. Research Instruments develops and manufactures customised scientific instrument
components and systems for fundamental and applied physics research, primarily for national research laboratories worldwide.
VMS' Ginzton Technology Center (GTC) develops technologies that enhance VMS' current businesses or may lead to new business
areas, including next-generation digital X-ray imaging technology, volumetric and functional imaging and improved X-ray sources and
technology for security and cargo screening applications. In addition, GTC is developing technologies and products that are designed
to improve disease management by more precise targeting of radiation, as well as by employing targeted energy and molecular
agents to enhance the effectiveness and broaden the application of radiation therapy.
VMS was formed in April 1999 after Varian Associates Inc reorganised into three separate publicly-traded companies ' Varian Medical
Systems (VMS, the former Varian Associates), Varian Inc (scientific instruments) and Varian Semiconductor Equipment Associates
Inc (semiconductors). VMS stock is traded on the New York Stock Exchange. VMS has been involved in the medical systems
business since 1959. In fiscal 2009 (ended 2nd October 2009), the company reported net income of US$319 million on revenues of
US$2,214 million.

The company also designs and manufactures X-ray tubes and flat panel digital image detectors for filmless X-ray imaging for use in medical, dental, veterinary, scientific and industrial applications. Furthermore, VMS designs and manufactures linear accelerators, digital image detectors, image processing software and image detection products for security and inspection purposes. VMS has approximately 5,100 employees located at more than 79 sales offices, manufacturing sites and other facilities worldwide. The company divides its business into three main segments: Oncology Systems ' its largest business segment ' designs, manufactures, sells and services hardware and software products for treating cancer. Its products include linear accelerators, brachytherapy afterloaders, treatment simulation and verification equipment and accessories, as well as information management, treatment planning and image processing software. Its products enable radiation oncology departments in hospitals and clinics to perform conventional radiotherapy treatments and offer the advanced treatment processes of fixed field intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) and stereotactic radiotherapy, as well as to treat patients using brachytherapy techniques, which involve radiation treatment of tumours with implanted radioactive sources. VMS products are also used by neurosurgeons to perform stereotactic radiosurgery. X-ray Products ' designs, manufactures and sells X-ray imaging components and subsystems, including: (i) X-ray tubes for use in a range of applications including computed tomography (CT) scanning, radiographic or fluoroscopic imaging, mammography, special procedures and industrial applications; and (ii) flat panel digital image detectors for filmless X-ray imaging, an alternative to image intensifier tubes for fluoroscopy and X-ray film and computed radiography (CR) systems for radiography. Varian's X-ray tubes and flat panel detectors are sold to a limited number of large imaging system OEM customers that incorporate these X-ray imaging components and subsystems into their medical diagnostic imaging systems and industrial imaging systems. The company's X-ray tubes are also sold directly to end-users for replacement purposes. Furthermore, VMS flat panel detectors are being incorporated into next-generation imaging equipment, including equipment for IGRT and for dental CT scanning and veterinary X-ray imaging. VMS' 'Other' category combines three other businesses: The Security and Inspection Products (SIP) business designs, manufactures, sells and services Linatron X-ray accelerators, imaging processing software and image detection products (including IntellX) for security and inspection purposes, such as cargo screening at ports and borders and non-destructive examination in a variety of applications.
